'06 Dirty Oil

I've got an '06 5. 9 with 10,237 miles on it (as of yesterday) When I check the oil it seemed very dirty (black)

A little back round The truck was a factory demo unit placed at the Ohio Dealer, asked dealer to change oil when I pruchased it, but am not sure he did, so I changed oil and filter at 67XX miles the first weekend. I again changed the oil and filter yesterday, (4000 miles on oil and filter) and the oil was black as could be. The old was hot when dropped. I use Delo 400 and standard Fleetguard LF3972 filters. I plan on changing the filter only at 2000 miles to see if it makes a difference, but it doesn't seem the filter has enough filtering capacity although it was heavy when I removed it. There was no oil added or needed between changes. Kinda' like the oil out of an old GM 671 at 20k miles.



Has anybody heard of this being a problem or is it a sign of the common rail system.



Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.

Its a diesel, thats just the nature of it. I have sent in oil samples that were black as tar and they came back good and ok for continued service.

The new trucks turn the oil black within a few hundred miles. I understand it's a characteristic of the engines with "third event" smog control.

Don't worry about the oil color.

Ill second that. Just the way diesels are. Some turn black within just a few miles. I didn't like it either but after a few oil tests I felt comfortable with it. But if it bothers you like it did me, you may consider going with a bypass oil filter. Other than that I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Yes it's been well established that the 04. 5 and newer rigs soot the oil up much faster than previous CTDs. cj hall has an 04 and an 05 Cummins which he's done oil samples on and the soot content on the 05 is far higher than the other truck over the same mileage.

OK, Thanks Guys! I'm going to do an oil test and change the filter at the 2000 mile mark from last oil change and see what the results are. Also talked to Robert Patton and he said his new truck as well as their VW is real dirty.

I do oil checks eveytime I change the oil in both of my trucks and they are both fine the 05 is a lot harder on the oil than the 04 and again its the third event. The soot levels in the 05 are running 158 on the scale and the 04 is running 74 on the scale. Cat Oil Services thinks I need to change the 05 oil around 2500 miles and the 04 is good for around 8000 miles. thinking a soot filter on her truck but I just dont know witch one to get.

I have not changed oil on my 94 for a year and it looks cleaner than the oil in my 06 after a few miles on after and oil change.

A By-Pass filter (2 micron filter) may not help how it looks but at least you will know the oil is not dirty, just discolored. Nothing gets through a 2 micron filter bigger than 2 microns. Your engine will not wear if you use synthetic oil. While it is running it will be polishing not wearing. Change filters (both) at 10K and add the oil lost in the change and your engine could go one million miles. That is what the big trucking companies do. Saves money. Just a word of caution that you may already know. Fill the canisters with oil before you screw them back on. This will keep from starving the Turbo on initial start up.

Even with Amsoil bypass filter and oil on my truck, the oil turns dark the minute I crank the mighty Cummins. To put my mind at ease I don't do oil test but just change the oil and both filters every 5K miles religiously. I know some people will say it is a waste since it will probably go longer with oil anaylysis... just me

I am from the "old school" so it took me a while to accept the concept of running full synthetic and ONLY changing the filters when you have a By-Pass system. Sending a sample off to the lab and being told the big trucking companies do it to save big Bucks helped me. For them an oil chance is at least 40 Qts. My old 1693 (I hope I remember the # I am going back to around 1976 0r 77) Cat took 44 Qts. It was a in-line 6 and 325 or 440 if you had an after cooler. Thank the good Lord we live in a free country and can do as we please, at least for now.

I know exactly how you feel, but rest easy. The last issue of TDR mentioned the oil should be good for 7500 miles in the 3rd gen trucks under normal conditions. My '06 scared the heck outta me when I first checked it. This is my 4th CTD, the last being a '99, and they all ran clean except when I used the Pac brake a lot, which sooted them up. I use the Fleetguard filters from Geno's garage, so I know the filter quality is good. I've been changing the Delo out every 3000 miles, but in light of the TDR article, I'm going to extend intervals and change according to work loads actually pulled.
