i had a working truck. i noticed a harer than average start yesterday, kinda like lack of a charge in battery.

I made a mental to investigate when i had time.

the very next restart 2 hrs latter truck was dead-clicks but no turning over just dead.
jumped it, got it to run, played with batter connections had (lights were flickering dash ding was going off) had a large arch of power to to correct battery terminal wile running- and it died

Wont restart again. Turns over, but no fire.
(in my big hurry i think i may have switched fuses around. in tipm module. )
the questionable spot is 42 says diesel pcm

*1st question Can someone tell me if spot 42 has a fuse in it on a working truck please? just to make sure.

Could a bad battery or alt cause the immediate pop of spot 42 fuse with ignition off?

I am pretty sure i have at least 1 battery or the alt is dead, but after the arc i think something might have a hard short causing the fuse to pop. i am in the process of testing them but all help will be appreciated.

Never disconnect a battery on a computer controlled truck while running! It is not a Valid alternator test but can do damage.
I had one just today that some one had played with-took out an ecm fuse ok not too bad but went on to find the tipm has also been damaged
 
well bob i wish i knew that yesterday... .

i have done cont. test and i have a hard short (aka cont from ground to the 30amp wire to computer.
its not the harness as we have isolated them and tested them separately.

Where and how to get the pcm replaced? all help would be Very much appreciated. .
 
If orignal battery they are at least five years old . you need two new ones now. Just had my 99 in the shop for injector pump and had 04 date sticker on the second set of batterys TEC stated, when I bought in new replacements ,he could hear the Dr side battery clicking and thought it eould or would have blown up . He had disconnected the grounds both sides . Its recomended to change both at the same time with identical batterys and correct size and rating.
 
well i replaced 2 bad batteries ( although 1 was truly shot)
Tested alternator -passes
Replaced Batery temp sensor
I had the pcm fixed today. however it appears they didn't do it right as the fuel pump has no power, and it cycles the exaust brake prior to start up- which is not NORMAL for this truck.

Going out of town so i mailed the pcm back to the company. .
I will update when i get it reinstalled.

That is not unusual for the rebuilders. Sometimes it takes up to 3 times to get a good one. Good luck with it.

Which company did you use?
 
Auto ECM grand praire TX as i am about 20 miles from them.

Does the fuel pump get power from the ecm or the tipm?
(i am trying to see if maybe the tipm is fried. )
I just go back in town and getting started on it again.
(they are dealing with my original computer not a rebuilt)
 
Well i gave up and towed to dealer they did a quick check, because i was on there butt to look at it today
He at the moment is getting no bus

It there a defiant test to determine the ecm bad vs the Tipm?
(cause i am about to eat it tomorrow $$$, and trying to pre price parts so i know where or what to do)

For future reference Fuse 42 comes out of the TIP via C3 pin 1 and feeds pins 20, 30 and 40 on C2 of the ECM.

well the result is ... . a bad ecm $$$mucho
i had auto ecm replace(they call i rebuild) diodes that typically get popped when jump starting
no go they only have very basic equipmet for test-- like 6 little lights that lite as a sign it works! however i did get all my money back
if it was a small arch of power this option most lickley would have worked

2 weeks later and a trip in bwteewn, and the holidays i determined ecm was still fried

towed to dealer, and it was no bus comm. i talked them down to internet price of ecm (saved like $500 cause i was gonnad drive an hr to get it if they didn't match) and quickly the agreed and lowered some labor quote and almost $2000 later it runs fine

i could have done one of the guys in fl however i had jobs to complete and it was only like a $700 more with dealer warranty

don't remove bateries cables while running!!!! that was the cause
but batteries were weak and would start the truck as the root cause.
