I agree that it seems a little on the weak side sometimes. I don't think it was designed to be much help on an empty truck running a flat road. I drive the mountains a bunch and when I am coming down, even with just a couple snowmobiles behind me, I notice a big difference between how much I see brake lights in front of me and how much I am using my own service brakes. This is at 30-35 mph and certainly not in its strongest rpm range. With a big load (14k lbs) and a decent grade (5 miles at 6%) at highway speeds (60mph limit) It really makes a big difference. I think that is more what it was intended for and it shows when operated that way.
You can use it with the high idle feature as well. First you have to have the high idle feature enabled so you can control it with the cruise buttons. The initial setting on the high idle is 1100 rpm. You can engage the brake at this rpm for warm up. I found though, if you try to increase the rpm above 1100 the brake will shut off.
