# 6 piston is shot. Truck started Knocking 400 miles ago. Dealer told me no warranty because of bully dog, and W/M#@$%!. We pulled the head yesterday to discover the #6 piston is bad. Maybe the cylinder.

This is not an uncommon problem I've heard. There is to much heat produced in the #6. I'm disgusted that the dealer won't warranty a known common problem:mad:.

I love my twelve valve and I wish the 24 was as capable of tuning. This is going to be expensive and it hurts:{.

Sorry for your problems, maybe a preformance shop on this site can help you out and rebuild it for you for alot less than a dealer can!

But, as I highlighted, you voided your warranty, sorry man! And a known problem? Um, all of the CTDs have problems with #6 getting hot... . when NOT stock. Stock, its fine, you add power, and you better have your eyes glued to the PYRO when you hammer down. Sorry, but you roasted that piston on your own, its not the engines fault. Your dealer had every right to void your warranty.

Again, I do feel for ya, having to fork out money, alot of money for a repair that you were not anticipating sucks, been there, done that. Hope you get it back together!

I Bet The Number 6 Inj Was Going And Roasted The Piston Under Daily Driving Conditions, Sure The Boxes Didnt Help, Just Shows How Easy It Is To Kill A Common Rail, Really A Pretty Simple Fix, Just Takes A Little Time, I Just Got Done Building Another Engine For The 03, Had Fun Doing It Too, This Was The Second Time For That Truck In 62000 Miles...

I sympathize with you over the disappointing news and for the expense you are facing just before Christmas. I wish you luck in getting it repaired inexpensively.

But let's be honest here. Its not accurate or fair to blame Dodge or Cummins. The engine failure you've experienced did not result from a defective part or bad assembly or installation technique. It is not an engine failure that is covered by warranty.

My '06 doesn't have that "not uncommon problem" your truck has. Mine has almost 221,000 miles on the odometer and has spent most of its life pulling heavy to very heavy loads.

I have routinely overloaded it pulling large fifth wheel trailers. One or two have been as heavy as 20,000 to 21,000 lbs. When you add the truck's 9,000 lbs. the way it is equipped and loaded to a 21,000 pound trailer the poor little Dodge dually has worked at a GCW of close to 30,000 lbs.

It has pulled many grades at a sustained EGT of 1425 to 1450 degrees until I crested the peak.

There are times when I'd like to have more power also but I have restrained the temptation and have not modified the engine because my limited understanding of the Gen III CR engine tells me that the factory turbo doesn't provide sufficient air flow to keep heat down with increased fueling and or timing created by the aftermarket boxes.

I hope you can repair your engine by simply replacing the #6 piston. Good luck.

Yup if you play sometimes you have to pay. I have spent alot of time here on TDR to study what needs to be done to keep these things together and reliable. and every mod i have done has been great for the most part and my egts are atleast 200 degs cooler than stock and i get better mileage.

Bummer, sorry to hear about that. Good luck on the rebuild. Hopefully you can do some neat stuff while you have to go inside the motor.

Good luck bra.

Does W/M mean water/methanol?

I didnt even catch that, I would have to think so. I know its suppose to help cool EGTs, but it also can increase your Drive Pressures too. And if used incorrectly, it can really mess up stuff.

I wish the poster would reply, I am curious as to what EGTs he pushed through this engine before it failed.

Thanks for yur support. II will have fun making this truck hot. I'll start pictures through the process. This is a dream to make a sweet ride fast. I just didn't expect it so soon; 20k miles. I'm looking at the positive side.

I like this responce! Early yes, that does suck, but glad to see that you seem to have accepted the fact that this wasnt soley the trucks fault. Excited to see what ya got planned! I was going to ask what you wanted for the truck as is, but figured that would be a little insensitive... :-laf

Yes W/M is water meth. Snow performance is a good product. When I installed it; It lowered egts during long hard pulls or passing on fast two lane highways.

EGTs were never higher than 1400 in short bursts. I never installed crazy Larry on the BD because there had been no other mods done. I was waiting to do Turbo,CP3 mod,Injectors, Tq conv at the same time. Then go for big HP numbers.

All mods AFE stage two, BD tripple dog, Snow Performance WM, 4" Superlift, 18 inch XDs,35s, Gears, Fab Four front bumper, Warn Winch, Rancho rear, Euro tails, Spray in liner including rear fender well.

doesnt it go in the tailpipe?

you can do that, but if you had the pyro probe in the down pipe, after the turbo, and saw EGTs in the 1400* range... its probably a good chance your pre-turbo temps are in the 15-1600+ range. I personally like it Pre-turbo in the rear bank of the exhaust manifold

You know If people just knew what all the add on boxes could do to a new truck... ... . :{ And how expensive it can be to repair the carnage.

There was a truck locally that had a problem last year. After all was said and done, the bill was almost $18k.
