I've got about 500 miles on it and when I put it in neutral and let the clutch out it makes an extremely loud rattleing sound (throw out bearing?), when I push the clutch back in it stops. It sounds like something's fixing to come apart. It does not seem to do it as bad when it's cold. I've had manual trannies before, and I know some noise is normal, but I can easily hear this over the engine noise. Is it normal for it to be that loud?

I have an 06 with a 6-speed. I have about 5000 miles on mine now and I can here a noise when I let the clutch out, but I think that it is normal. You have to really listen for it when you let the clutch out. I believe I would take it in if I were you.

mine makes the same noise, but it's not all the time. i also get a strange vibration at idle. i'm going to bring it in and have it looked at... james

clutch

03's had a pressure plate problem resulting in a factory tsb, maybe something similiar, shouldn't make any more noise either pushed in or not

Noise Analysis

Bearing is in constant contact all of the time, difference is in the load applied to the bearing and position of the bearing. The G56 took a belt and suspender approach to noise reduction. It uses a DMF and the disc has a torsion damper (springs in the hub) to keep the trans quiet. I did this with our 12V on the way back from TN one day, take an empty plastic soda or water bottle and with the top off, hold the bottle against the stick, the bottle acted like a little megaphone, heard all kinds of noise, it just might help hear the trans or clutch noise while moving, or stopped. When the truck and the disc is not moving (stopped, and clutch released-pedal on floorboard) the only things that can still be making noise are the pilot bearing, throw out bearing, Self-Adjusting Clutch cover components (possibility for SAC making noise, IMHO, remote, but it contains lots of extra parts) and with the G56, the DMF is still in play. Good luck.

Just wondering what became of the rattling noises you had going on? Mine is making a very similar noise under the same circumstances.

Each his own. Have looked at two at a friends transmission shop. Probably high mileage units. Pretty loose. Think he told me he goes back with solid units.

On the contrary, the DMF on G56 tranies makes the in cab noise and vibration all gone, i know i switched to a SBC clutch.
Exactly my sentiments. This is the quietest, best functioning clutch and transmission I've ever used. I gonna milk it for as long as I can. Everybody's pleased with the holding power of the SBC's,but it seems everyone acknowledges more noise. I sold the '99 to slip into the quiet zone.

Actually the noise that was attributed to the switch of the solid setup from the DMF was the disc design. We have changed the design and the noise and vibration is gone.

I have 111,000+ on mine and it does not make any noise. It is an 05.
In would suspect the pilot bearing and or the throwout bearing, personally.
lettuce know when you find out.

Free play when depressing the clutch pedal?

How much free play do you guys have when first depressing the clutch pedal. Mine seems to have a 1/4" before engaging. G56 Trans

CON-OFE disk design change?

Actually the noise that was attributed to the switch of the solid setup from the DMF was the disc design. We have changed the design and the noise and vibration is gone.

When did the clutch design change? I just installed the CON-OFE in my '06 which I purchased late last year and after received the correct hydraulics today (my thanks to South Bend Clutch and Peter for getting the correct one out overnight), when I ran the truck it makes a pretty loud rattling noise at idle, it seems to go away a bit above idle and it does go away when the clutch is depressed.

I did drive it and it seems fine other than at idle - it is quite loud inside the truck. Outside? Who can hear it over the engine...
