Reading through all my manuals on the new 06' when I noticed a change to Schedule B Maintenance. It now has an 7500 mile interval for oil and filter changes. The 04' 3500 called for oil changes every 3750 miles.

This will probably open a can of worms, but.

What are you 06' owners doing for intervals while using dinosaur oil such as Mopar or Rotella T? I'm thinking about sticking with the 3750 miles just to keep fresh life blood running through the Cummins.

Good choice on changing oil

If I travel long distance I change at 5000 but if it all city driving 3000. That me and it works for me because I have never had any engine problem. I use fleetguard oil filters, just got some from Geno's. Got to take care of your baby. :D

The 7500/15K schedule came out with the 2004. 5 CTD 600 I think. I do mine at 5000-6000, which works out to twice a year for me. There are some things on the schedule that do not make sense, such as 15K front and rear diff changes, but no recommended service for the 6 speed manual trans.

My '03 Sch B has the 3750 mile change for california trucks but 7500 miles for non cali trucks. Sch A has the 7. 5K/15K change.

I follow the 7500 mile change schedule but am thinking of switching to a 5000 mile change frequency.

I'm doing mine at 3K for the first 15K and using the recommended fluids. At 15K I am going to install a bypass filter and go to Amsiol synthetic. Then I will probably look at 5K changes. Oil and filters are cheap, engines are not. Everything I have read, here and elsewhere, suggests that the engine would be fully broke in and everything seated. My service manager at my dealership thought this would be an OK plan. He actually supported the 7500 mile changes as per my manual. I tow heavy loads, work my trucks like trucks. I do a mix of city and highway driving and am always going in and out of a lot of altitude changes. I noticed my oil gets real black real fast, so I figured more frequent changes would be a better idea.

It's OK for the oil to get real black real fast on these new Cummins engines. There has been a lot of discussion on this on TDR. With the newer engines and improved oil I feel it's safe to change oil and oil filter every 5,000 miles, even if you tow heavy. Maybe even every 7,500 miles. Just use good oil and a good filters as recommended by Cummins.

I'm thinking an interval of either 4000 or 5000, maybe split the difference. Mine is around town and pulling a 14,000 lb. 5th wheel. I do all my own routine maintenance. I'm a firm believer in Rotella T oil and use Fleetgaurd filters for everything. Got a buddy who is parts manager at the Cummins shop and gets them for me at cost. Way cheaper the the dealer rip off for Mopar.

The CA. trucks had the 3750 mile oil change interval (sched. B).

My '03, HO has the 15,000 (A. ) & 7500 (B. ) intervals.

I've been running Chevron Delo-400 15X40, since my first oil change. The last two oil changes, I ran it up to right around 8000 mile intervals & had used oil analysis performed. Each time, the oil reports came back as in very good shape. This next time, I'm thinking of running up to 9000 miles & doing an analysis report. I'm thinking of extending the oil change intervals by a thousand miles, each change, until the oil starts to degrade. Then, go back a thousand miles. I, also, live in the desert Southwest (Phoenix), which, is hard on oils (heat & dust).

Much of the reading, I've done, by those that are "really informed" in oil related matters, suggests that the new oils are very robust & that premature oil changes are kind of a waste of time, money & oil. However, I DO understand the "warm & fuzzy feeling" one can get by giving your truck more than adequate attention. Can't fault anyone for that.

It's just that I do my own oil changes & other service. For me, it's not fun but, something that is required maintainance. So, if I can "safely" extend the intervals, that's less work for me & more efficient use of oil & filters.

BTW, I'm, seriously, thinking of installing an oil bypass filtration system so that longer oil drain intervals can be done more safely.

The maintenance schedule calls for 15,000 miles for oil change and 7,500 for severe duty. So you can change earlier then scheduled, but is it really needed?

Follow the 7,500 mile change interval, and be happy, and sleep well at night!

Okay -- I have an '06. I just went and got the Owner's Manual out of my truck. There is a Maintenance Log - It has two Maintenance Schedules - one is Schedule B and one is Schedule A. Schedule B shows to be 3,750 and Schedule A shows to be 7,500. Vinconco, could you point me to a page number to reference for the 7,500/15,000? I'm probably just missing it... ;)

The 3750 is for the first oil change on Schedule B. If you look at later maintenance mileage charts, you will see the 7500 for oil changes on Schedule B.

I am going to do the 3750 for the first change and then every 5000 miles for later changes. I will probably do one at 5000 miles (1250 from the first - takes a month) to get my odometer to 5000 mile multiples when oil changes are due.

I follow the 7500 mile schedule... The oil tends to get black two days after an oil change anyway. Dodge says it is ok, so it is ok with me. .

I change my fuel filters at 15,000 miles, but do my air filters at every oil change, because they don't seem to last long. .

Sched B

JMalone

My 06 manual, page 446, for Sched B shows to just lub the front drive shaft at 3750. Then shows oil and filter change with all the other routine stuff at 7500.

The Maintenance Log Book, for Sched B shows lub the front drive shaft, check levels and a couple other things at 3750. Then it also shows the oil and filter change, with all the other stuff at 7500.

Hope this helps. .

Hey Away:

I think we may have different manuals. My "schedule B" maintenence log starts on page 432. The schedule "A" starts on page 445. My schedule B starting mileage is 3750 and the only service is a drive shaft lube. The first oil change is at 7500 and subsequent changes are every 7500 miles.

I prefere to change my oil every 100 hours. Its easy to check your hour meter some of us idle alot for me I think it's a more constant way for all maintance things. 100 hr = 4000 miles for me
