smarty towing question

My milage is pretty impressive (to me anyway) on my '06 Mega. The truck wieghs 7700 lbs, has a bunch of power even stock, and gets 20 mpg regularly. It has 40k miles on it, at least 15k of that towing heavy on long trips. I think you need to be patient and work the engine hard before you will see the milage come up. My '03 QC was running 22 mpg and pulled my old Buick GS, open trailer, 75 mph, getting over 15. I could never dream of numbers like that from my 7. 3 Ford or either Duramax I had. I never did own a second gen, but I am considering one to take over some of the haerd work from the Megacab :)

Cummins Cowboy are you staying current on the DC software releases?

Marco can provide better fuel economy and lower egt's with his software's

Bob,

How does one "stay current" with the DC software releases? Do you mean the TSB reflash numbers? Wouldn't it cost each time you wanted a reflash to stay up to date? Or, are you saying these are provided by the Smarty?

I'm just interested since I have a early release 06 MC (built Aug. 05), don't get great mileage (been around 15-16 mixed driving since day one w/ 25K miles and no improvement with break in). I've heard the reflash for "white smoke, hard start, and transmission shifts (all in one) has improved the mileage for some, just fooled the overhead for others, and even gone down for some. So, I'm seriously considering a reflash but have been holding off.

Would it mattered if I went ahead and got the reflash (or any tsb) and then upload a Smarty? Or, does the Smarty just completely over ride/bypass any stock settings and therefore make any reflashes done ahead of time void?

Thanks

My 06 MC (built Oct 05) was in the 18-19 range when I bought it. Had it flashed for the P0191 mileage dropped to 15-16. In Dec 06 I was in and had it flashed for the white smoke, mileage dropped to 11. 37 on the only tank full I've run since then. I just filled up yesterday. Needless to say, I AM NOT a very happy camper. Between the new ULSD and the winter stuff added, this is rediculous.

Sometime last year, in a post here somewhere, someone was discussing how all this emissions stuff was going to kill the great mileage of the diesels and that eventually we all would be getting the fuel mileage of a big block gasser. Whoever that was must have a crystal ball or got inside information because that sure seems the way we are headed.

Why the large variations?

I know that driving habits, mods and loads will all make a difference but it still seems like the range of reported milage is vast. Some will use their overhead which I find to be be about 2 miles per gallon optomistic on my truck. Some will pencil figure their milage on a 100 mile fill up which can be off do to fill up variances. All that said I still can not understand why some members state milage numbers of 13 while others proudly announce 23 plus while driving 70 to 75 on the freeway.

I seem to average about 13-14 in town and 18-19 on the highway at 70 mph and below. With a full aux tank and all the things that made a one way trip into the cab and bed of this truck. I fiqure I got to be over 8000 pounds before I get it in. I think my milage is OK but I dream about the elusive 23 MPG that others report.

My 06 gets 14-15 city and 20-21 hwy (under 70mph) with mods in sig. Pretty good for a 8100# truck IMO. all hand calculated with 16k on the clock.
