Gentlemen.....

My father in law's 06 SRW 4X4 3500 has a muffler delete kit from Geno's and has now gutted the kitty the Peterbuilt type sound is wearing him down:eek:.

Does anyone make a straight through muffler that will work where the muff delete is now?

Thanks

Sorry, I don't know the answer. There was a muffler that fit the late Gen II trucks that I had on my old '01 but I don't remember the brand name now. I think Joe Donnelly wrote about it in a long ago TDR magazine article. You could find a reference to it if you search Joe's old posts.

I deleted the muffler but left the cat converter in place on my '06. I liked the sound and never had any problem with law enforcement. I heard a couple of fellow transporters who had also gutted their converter. I was outside and some distance from the truck. I liked the "Peterbuilt" sound as you described it but I thought at the time it would become a little too much for me in the cab.

Your f-i-l must not live in KA. A late model Ram truck making that much noise would surely alert the smog cops.

When I bought my '06, it already had one of those mini straight-thru mufflers, maybe 6" diameter, 18" long. I cut it out and went to our local big rig store and bought a huge one ( roughly 30" x 12" ) 4" inside diameter all the way through, with three expansion chambers built in. It is probably as free flowing as a straight pipe, as quiet as stock, just deeper.
I was able to hook it up with just minor fabrication and I'm very happy with how it sounds. I like my truck quiet, yet deep. Also, I still have my catalytic converter in place.

I THINK aBout the only muffler that will drop in with no mods is the factory one.

With that being said, you might check Donaldson Mufflers. Seems like its a pretty good fit and has a nice sound without being obnoxious.

Thanks gents... .

HB

Your right he's not in America's liberal nerve center. He's in Wa St!!!!!.

Were just trying to set his 06 up like my 05, without replacing four inch with four inch.

He likes the sound of mine, which is a silverline 4" system with a dummy cat.

Gutted cats generally make the exhaust sound horrible, but it depends on how it gutted.

The 40" Donaldson mufflers should fit between the cat and muffler delete pipe. I have mine where the Cat was.

Mine is gutted completely. It is mounted a little further back than the original spot. No drone at all with the Silverline muff.

Depends on how much tone he wants to live with... I have no cat and run a 30" Magnaflow with good results.

The Donaldson's are offered in hundreds of configurations, so if you decide on that route; you should be able to find something that will fit. They did have a wesite that showed all the configurations... the flavor of choice for a long time was a 50" long, 5" diameter pipe, that was around 10" in diameter.

I also gutted the cat and was running a 4'' straight through muffler for a while. After a few months i was ready for something a little quieter. I found an edelbrock diesel muffler on ebay and am running that now. its just a little louder than stock but much quieter than the regular performance mufflers. Its difficult to describe the design but its a straight through but also has chambers. The straight through part doesnt tie in to the inlet and outlet, it is recessed back a couple inches. Above and below the center are seperate chambers that the gas can also pass through. it flows very well and have had no increase in egt's thus far.
