I was told that our trucks have an opti idle feature (kick up the rpm's a hair) but for the life of me, I can't find it to give my dealer the info. He's clueless. Does anyone here know what I can tell him to make this happen? I had the tsb for the battery temp sensor and charging issue today, so we'll see if that helps.

what was the charging issue? I have an 06 but haven't had any tsb's done. I do notice the amps drop some times just after start up, but I assumed that was the grid heater.

Don't quote me on this but I beleive I seen in another thread.

It's easy to use the high idle feature (as long as it's enabled: If it's not, go to your dealer and ask them to enable it with the DRBIII. If they don't know how, it's under engine and it's under transmission. Just scroll down to 'enable high idle feature' in either section).

Your foot has to be off the brake and stay off the brake; just put on the park brake. Transmission has to be in park or neutral.

1. Turn on the cruise

2. Push 'Set'

3. Pushing 'Accel' should ramp it up from 1100 rpm to a max of 1500 rpm (Using 'Decel' will bring it down from a max of 1500 to a low of 1100). If you just tap either button, you should get 100 rpm change for each tap.

4. To turn off: Just tap the brake pedal, turn off the cruise, hit cruise cancel, or drop it into gear (if you do this slowly, basically just moving the gear shift around in neutral it will give the ECM time to drop the rpms before you LAUNCH your truck. You will know when you have moved the gear shift enough as the rpm will drop fast, even though the transmission has not engaged yet).

DC only wants the auto trucks to have this feature. It can be enabled on manuals, it just takes a bit more to get it to work... ... I am still finding out if they will just enable PTO control so it will do the same thing.

First get the dealer to turn on the high idle feature.

turn cruse on, sitting still, with your foot off the brake pedel, in park, when you hit set the idle will go up to around 1100, hit accel and it will go up higher, all the way to 1500.

If its a manual truck you need a clutch switch. there was a thread about a month ago where we dug out several part numbers. One kit was around $100. 00, but cummins never had it. dealer wants like $300. 00 for kit. Someone else posted 2 part numbers that I bought. A switch and a wire with ECM pin already installed. I think I dropped around $45. 00, but had to make my own bracket to mount the switch. Others without non movable pedels mounted the switch with double sided tape.

sorry I am in the outerbanks on Vacation on a slow internet connection, or I would search for you.

I had this feature on my old company truck and loved it (Chevy 4500) but when I asked the dealer to turn it on in my '06, he told me that there's no way that this truck has it, it's an emission thing, etc etc. What should I tell him so that he won't act like a dork?? Fyi, it's an auto trans.

My 06' 6spd has some type of (slightly) higher idle feature. When vehicle is first turned on the high idle enables after vehicle idles for 2 or 3minutes. Don't touch the brake or gas pedal. Vehicle has never been to dealer for reflash. I bought the vehicle Oct 05'.

this sounds like the "real cold" high idle.

The other one is an "on demand" high idle you can turn on and off when you want.

Yes, the 06 can do it. But auto and manual (manual requires a clutch switch) If I recall past threads, the dealer has to have the latest software in Their computer, once they got that its right in the menus.

On the manual, Even without the clutch switch installed, the dealer can still turn on the high idle, it just will not work until you install the clutch switch. Had mine done before I got the clutch switch.

I know that on my truck it is an option that has to be enabled through your ECM with the DRBIII tool. The TSB for my 04. 5 is TSB# 18-004-04. Your dealer should be able to figure out how to enable it.

Where would one be able to snatch a DRB III Tool? I am highly interested in something like that. Even thought is a dealers only, there has to be a way for a consumer to find the back doors to this unit. Any Ideas?

From what I understand, the DRB III does not work on the 06 trucks. For these trucks the dealer uses a new tool called Star Scan.

I had mine enabled a long time ago, and it works great!

:D Lots of luck, pretty spendy looking unit!

As for the Idle up feature, it is just one of the many dealer programmable features of the 06 trucks. Also available is the accessory options (how long after turning off the key the stereo and windows will work) and fog lamp control (weather or not the fog lamos turn off when switching on high beams) and lots of others. My dealer didn't even know about it and I showed him where in the new scan tool the adjustments were. TDR is great for giving you info to stumo your Diesel Tech with!!!

We should start a new thread on what you have asked your Diesel tech that has stumped him! :D :-laf

He knew there were some dealer programmable features on the truck, but programming was a little confusing. I did all but take the scan tool from him as we went down the list of options. Good thing me and the tech are good friends. You just have to know what you are looking for and have the capability to look over your tech's shoulder while he plays.

The idle feature can be enabled on both automatic and standard transmission '06 trucks. It will however, work only on the automatic. To be made fully operational on the standard transmission truck, a clutch switch is needed. My dealer told me it was to have been released by the manufacturer on May 8th, and it'd be in dealers hands some time after that. I'm awaiting a call so I can take my truck in to have it installed.

The part # as well as the "code" to turn it on are in other posts. I'm too lazy to search right now - did that a few weeks ago to help get some info. together for the idle feature.

The purpose of the idle up setting is to keep the exhaust gas temps. high enough during prolonged idling. Not sure of other uses, PTOs, air compressor units perhaps?

I want it functionable so I can keep my truck running this summer if I choose - I live in the Phoenix area and work out of my truck, so coolness is cool to me.

It's in the owner's manual. Show that to your dealer. I had the same problem with my dealer. They didn't give me any run-around or BS (emisions, gimme a break), they just didn't know. I got them to plug up the DRB and we scrolled thru the menus and found it. The DRB would be a great too to have. He show me some of what it could do. But very pricey.

Maybe we should hook up, I'll be in Sacramento from June 5-9 at the CHP Academy for some training. Trust is a big thing with me and I don't quite trust my local dealer yet. The emissions comment was a real turn off. Maybe also look into my stuttering issue.
