Can a diesel run too lean, or doesn't it matter?

Hey guys, Gotta buddy with an 06 with 7k miles that can barely manage 8MPG unloaded... Dealer saya no reflash is available... anybody know any better?

I don't know of a reflash, but it sounds like something is wrong with his rig - or he pins the thing more than I do! BTW, is that overhead numbers or hand calc?

How fast does he drive? Something else must be wrong. I'm averaging 16mpg with a best of 17mpg with my 4x4 6spd Megacab. Current mileage on the truck is 4200miles. Has he towed anything yet to help with the break in?

New to the web site and the Dodge family. Traded in my 99 F250 Power Stroke. My 06 has about 2200 miles and I'm getting on the avg af about 15 to 16.

There are a number of monitors available on the star scan that can be looked at to help explain the mileage your buddy is getting. I have found sometimes just going for a ride with the driver will explain poor mileage :-laf

I gotta say your frined seems awful short on patience. I had about 5K on mine and took a run up to Chi town to haul home a Jeep. Running up with an empty car hauler was getting about 15-16, which was normal for the truck. Byt the time I got up there (525 miles) the overhead had dropped to 13. Should have clued me in, but didn't. Anyway, load the old Scrambler, get a few hours sleep and head back. Was getting nothing more than 10 mpg and had no power between 2250 and redline.

Ran her home, left it on the dealer lot. He calls next day, changed the fuel filter, runs like new. It did. Get about 16-18 depending on how hard I push it now, 13 or so with 6-8K in tow.

I bet your buddy got a load of bad fuel and has never changed his fuel filter. He should be on his second already.

My 06 Mega Cab 6K mi is only getting apx 12 around town and best ever 14 hwy. Far from the 16 to 20 I got in my 97. Love the truck but very disappointed in mileage.

Just turned 35,000  (yes 35k, it will be 8 weeks old friday!! :D ) on my 06. So far a low 7. 8 towing with BAD winds, high with no wind flat ground 11. 2. All highway best running approx 70 is 18. 6 and a low around 16. Never really ran a tank just around town to say on that. I would say my overall avg is 10-10. 5 towing and 17. 5 or so empty. Karl

I know that my friends and I didn't by these big trucks for the gas milage. Some of my buddies ask, not miles per gallon but gallons per mil.

Well, if you take a gander back into the above posted link, apparently there has been a TSB about this with some 06's that was issued ... ... . you guessed it... 12-21... he had a reflash and hopefully this will solve his problems. Thanks for all the replies guys. I dont care what the 2nd gen guys say, you all are allright in my book :-laf

I moved to SC about four months ago, and back to Colorado about one month ago. When I left, I was averaging about 18MPG city and highway mix. Best on the highway was about 23 at 55mph. On my way back I was doing 85 towing about a 6K trailer and the overhear dropped to around 10 MPG. After my next fuel stop, it jumped up to 13-14MPG, so I think I got a bad tank of fuel. When I unhooked the trailer, the overhead was showing over 25 MPG at 55. At 70 I am around 21MPG. I guess it is finally broken in. I hand calculate every tank and the overhead is consistantly 1 to 1. 5 MPG lower than actual. Last average was 19. 9 on the overhead with more city driving then when I left. Hand calculated was 21. 4. I feel very lucky to get this kind of milage.
