Hi.
My son is looking at an 06 mega dually laramie with 68,000 miles. Is there anything we should be looking for in particular besides the normal 3rd gen items? It may be just me, but it seems that the 06 model years have more odd problems that the other years. Anyone care to comment?
Thanks.

Dan

I had an '06 and it was probably the best truck I've ever owned. Other than the front seats, hvac doors and rear door wiring the truck was perfect. I had other problems, but they were all caused by things I did. If that truck is in good shape and well taken care of, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

I'm approaching 250K on mine and I wouldn't get rid of it for anything. Oh sure, I've had the normal wear and tear items but overall I'm very pleased. The TIPM issue which appears to be peculiar to 06's can be circumvented if adding additional lights by wiring straight to the batteries using relays and not including the TIPM in the circuit, as well as being careful when hooking up trailer wiring of questionable character. Otherwise, I would say the 06's share the same problems common to previous models.

I agree. I have had no unexpected issues. Truck has been great so far.

I had mine (2500 mega) for 8-1/2 years and 53k miles. I was really starting to appreciate and realize what the truck was before I sold it. The only reason I did sell it was because I was topped out with our new fifth wheel and wanted to be able to take the wife and kids anywhere without any doubt.
The steering linkage was upgraded to the 4th gen setup by recall. I later had to have the steering box replaced after doing a lot of hard over to hard over turns on tree roots and stuff with the fifth wheel hooked up. If I didn't get the new truck I was eventually going to get a steering stabilizer and a heavier steering box.
The hvac door as posted above.
Replaced driver window regulator.
Speed sensor replaced.

Nothing other than the above. Hadn't so much as changed a light bulb. Hell, I was still on the original batteries and tires when I sold it. If the new one didn't cost so much, I would have kept the 06 for my son to have in a few years.

I believe that an 06 is a good truck. I have an 05, which is very much the same except for the 6 speed manual transmission, if that's what it has. My 05 has the NV5600 cast iron very reliable trans. The 05.5 and newer have the G56 aluminum transmission with the dual mass flywheel, which have been somewhat troublesome for some owner's.

My 06 has 101K on it, well maintained, used to tow hay and cattle up to 14K. The truck has had an AC compressor, HVAC door and a couple npt plugs retaped in the block that were weeping coolant.
Tires, new exhaust, driver seat pad, left rear caliper and brakes are it. I change oil at 5K or so, fuel filter at 10K, I use the Seafoam soak on the filter when new to help the injectors stay clean. Love the truck have no plans on getting rid of it.

On my 06', I added the steering brace as preventive maintenance. I did have to repair the driver rear door wiring. It's the door my daughter consistently uses. I also had to replace the rear driveline Ujoints. No big deal. Normal maintenance issues. I added the exhaust brake very early in the vehicle lifespan. At 118k miles I still have over 50% brake life on factory brake pads.

Bought my 2006 MC 4x4 in 2007 with 17k on the odo..... Now I am at 106k. Only "issues" were the HVAC blend doors. All the steering stuff was taken care of by the dealer as they tried a few different fixes for the known steering issues. I do the oil every 10k and it's been a great truck.

Oddly..... I paid $30k in 2007 and I could sell it for $30k now in 2016!!

Almost 150k on my 06 now. Just replaced wear and tear items, ball joints, shocks, water pump, and just replaced stock front brake pads not long ago.

I have 65K, mostly towing miles' on my 2006 and the only problem so far was the steering box, Seems that some of them just go bad and Dodge/Ram has since come out with a beefier box. At the time mine went bad I replaced it with a Borgeson box and shaft. No problems since just routine maintenance.

Look like I'm going to be the odd man out. My '06 has about 200k on it, 70k of which I put on. I have fixed tons of stuff, including pretty much everything named above, and a whole list more. Everything from silly stuff like the heater doors and door lock wiring and gauge cluster failure. Then serious stuff like A/C compressor, oil pan, rear main seal, transmission (auto), front hubs, balljoints (twice), front axles, etc. It never seems to end for me. I'm buying a new truck, one piece at a time..lol. I love the looks of the truck though. :)

Old thread but...

Still running strong, 139k on the clock. Untouched stock trans and I've been running a 75hp tune for 9 years. Going to go with an ATS stage 5 in the future. Towing and daily driver... It's been good to me so I am good to it.
