I hear they've done away with all 10. 5's for the cummins (auto and stick); but I hear some saying maybe the shaft housing is a thinner wall on the 3/4 tons which is part of the lower GVW (not just the overload springs).

On my 01 2500 5spd. I had the Dana 80 Hybrid (80 guts, but 70 housing I believe), and the full 80's were on the duals only. So, is this the case with the 2500's these days, or are they Exactly the same axle as the 3500 SRW's? . . (and I'm assuming that only the brake size is still different on the duallys like the dana's were).

One more thing (I got a bet with a friend), what about the front coils? Are they rated different on the 2500 and 3500's? Or, do they have to take some of the load to get to the higher total GVW? And, aren't the main rear spring packs (not the overloads) the same on both (width/thickness/number/load rating, etc. )? I said the ride is exactly the same on both the 2500 and 3500 assuming all this is true.

Not for sure but I remember reading in one of the 4X4 mags about the 11. 5 AAM in the SRW 2500 and 3500 having a thinner axle shaft wall-something around . 375 or . 5" whereas the dually version of the 11. 5 had a shaft housing that was around . 625" thick.

why would they do that? it is easier(and cheaper) just to use the same materials in them all, just make it wider for the duallys. The weight ratings are based on more than the axles, the springs and tires are part of the equation. is the front axle rating the same between the 2500 and 3500? the only difference I know of between the 2500 and 3500 SRW is the overload pack in the rear which give it the higher GVWR. The dually adds another pair of tires(obviously) for its higher GVWR.

Not necessarily easier and cheaper. We retooled for a new version of the 604 transmission to save $7. 00 a transmission. At an annual volume of 1,000,000 you can see the cost savings. This new transmission had I think one fewer clutchs and a different rear carrier.
