06 seats..... O how i hate yeee.... but not anymore!

So today i did the "06 seat mod" i used 2 inch high density foam from the craft store and then stuck some chopped up carpet under it and SHOVED them in under the seats. WOW what a diffrence. but let me tell you, they do not make the seats easy to get out! they are all hooked together.



so i had to unbolt the seats, 8 bolts total, un hook the power to the driver seat, pull the driver seat out just far enough so i could unbold the center storage bin, 3 bolts, 2 back, 1 front, then take the seats out in two parts. other then that is was not to bad. i did scar up my plastic on the driver door panel but its worth having a butt that does not hurt after 5 min of driving.



in the two pics i have posted you can see the driver seat out with the foam and carpet in, ready to get the springs re-attached to the wire grid. then you can see how the seat "bulges" or looks pregnant as the wife commented.

Looks good. I tried that on my truck and it did not work for me as i am a big guy. I pulled out the stock front seats and replaced them with a set of 2nd gen seats. I did have to replace the foam with 6" foam but i love the results!

I am going to HAVE to do that soon... my butt kills me after 10 minutes in that seat... Not sure why they made them that way, put a brace under each cheak. Horrible. #@$%!

I am not impressed with the seats in my 05 either, I like that they are cloth and not the ugly stuff they went to in 06 but the seats in my 02 are awesome. The 05 seats are narrower and bite into my outer hips as I am a wider man in the posterior also and weigh in at 270ish.

who ever designed this style of seat, needs to be drug in to the street and shot. or forced to go from sanfran to newyork in a truck with the bad seats!

I put in a set of leather seats out of an 08. Comfy, leather, and heated. A triple win.

I too hate the seat in the 06. I loved the one in my 94. This thing is to narrow. putts the cheek of your butt at an angle. I like the foam idea but I am up to high already. I have the seat down as far as it will go. I also would like a way to get the seat backrest as far back as I want without adjusting it after I get in.

I am not sure but I have read that several people here have done second gen seats in 3rd gens so the mounts must be pretty close.

The seat in my 94 have held up great. My 06 seat are already stained and look hammered after 16,000 miles. guess i will get some covers.

I, also, added foam to my '03 front seats. My old Pinto had better seats than this Dodge. They're un-believably bad!!!



While searching for an answer, I went to an upholstery warehouse in Tempe, AZ. & talked to the owner. He was genuinely interested in my problem & showed me some 1/2" closed-cell foam & carpet samples. The closed-cell foam is VERY dense. If you squeeze it between your fingers, you can only compress it to half its normal thickness. The other foams the warehouse had were much thicker but, could be compressed far more than the closed-cell product.



I disassembled the seats, lay the carpet samples over the "ladder" (wire framework) & installed the closed-cell foam. Re-installed the seats & have not had any problems, since. Last Oct. I drove over 3600 miles in 11 days. That trip would have killed me, before. The seats were comfortable with the "fix".



The owner of that upholstery warehouse sure did me a favor by suggesting the closed-cell foam & the carpet samples. Previously, after about an hour & a half, my right leg would feel like it was going to sleep & would ache, badly. I would literally fall out of the truck & walk around til the ache went away. For less than $10. 00, I'm now comfortable on longer trips.



Instead of all the electronic crap the engineers put in these trucks, I wish they had spent just a few moments building decent, comfortable seats. It's not like every Dodge truck ever built did not have seats. They have got to have close to 100 years experience installing seats in their trucks. I couldn't find my way into the front door of an engineering school & out the back door. I'm a dental technician, by trade. If I can create a comfortable seat for my truck, why can't they??? I'm 63 & was really concerned that my phsycal health was headed south since I had never felt an ache like that before. No wonder Chrysler is in the "basement of the outhouse"!!!



Boy, after this rant, my rear-end, leg & the rest of me feels better!!!

You know, I'm even angrier at Chrysler after seeing that the '06 trucks are having this problem. Mine is an '03. That means that Chrysler has known about their crappy seats for 'at least' THREE YEARS & has not remedied the situation. What the hell are they waiting for???



For a whole six dollar investment, a person can totally fix this problem. Chrysler could do it for a whole lot less. How could they be that cheap? Look at the reputation they are getting? Six bucks is not too much to NOT have a serious problem eliminated, & protect your reputation, in my opinion.

I agree and plan to get my front seat foam replaced under warranty. Soon after I will do this mod. Hopefully it will not brake the foam down as quickly. I still think the stock bucket seats in my 1 gen 93 were the most comfortable.

I bought the 1/2" closed-cell foam. They have a big roll of it. They only will cut a piece along the full width of the foam. I think I asked for 20" & got 20-1/2". Don't remember the width but, there is enough to do four front seats. The carpet samples were $1. 00 ea. Total investment was just under $10. 00.



The closed cell foam is not where the regular upholstery foam is, in the store. That is at the north end of the store. The closed-cell foam is at the far front, southern end of the store. It was on top of one of their shelves. The owner is the one to talk to. Sharp guy & very helpful. He, actually, went out to my truck & checked the seats, personally, & said He had just what I needed. He was RIGHT!!! The closed-cell foam is a cream color. The regular foam was green or blue. The closed-cell foam is like the wrestling/gymnastic mats we used to have when I was a kid in school. I'm 63, now so, that was a long time ago. But, that's what this product seems like, to me.

Add another to the list of 06 seat haters. My right leg goes numb. I think I might have some back issues to begin with, but if feels like one side of the seat is higher than the other. I've contemplated taking them apart and trying to figure something out, but it looks like there are some good ideas on here already.

Memory foam MIGHT work well as the top couple of inches or so, but not the whole depth, or you'd sink right down to the springs in a short while...
