Won't turn over left me stranded 1st time ever. Two months ago tried to start wouldn't so tried a few times and started. Pulled off battery cables both batteries and wire brushed and cleaned posts, put anti corrosion on. One month ago same thing wouldn't turn over, took about a dozen times before it started. Yesterday left me stranded got a ride home 5 miles. Today went back tried to start a few times with the key nothing. Went under truck took off rubber boot on fat wire to starter solenoid, nut was tight tried to wiggle wire it was snug. Went back tried to start truck fired right up. Drove home shut off and tried to start, started up again. So today I'm going to take nut off starter solenoid and clean nut and the wire end. Do you think the starter could have a short in it? Any other suggestions will be appreciated thanks Dave (ride0169) 150K now

That sounds like the starter contacts are worn out. Check out Larry B's for replacement contacts, it's an easy job.

Geno's has them for about $20. My wife says it is not an easy job, LOL. You do need a twelve-point 10 mm wrench and a good arm, especially on that top, upside-down, backwards bolt. They're torqued down to about 130 ft.-lbs.

One other thing I'd like to say, Is that every time I've had this problem that there has not once been a clicking sound that others have mentioned just turned the key and quiet. So before I jump into pulling the starter, would there possibly be something else to check thanks again (electrical gremlins.)

if you do not hear clicking sounds, the problem may be the starter relay. It is located in the relay box near your driver side battery. The location is identified on the box lid. You can probably swap the starter relay with another one from a different location to test. Just make sure it is the same kind of relay.

I hope it's the starter relay rather than the points in the starter solenoid. If it's either one you won't hear any clicking. But, looking at the age of the starter, it's about time for the solenoid to need a little maintenance.

Ok thanks I'll try that tomorrow
