Wanted to take off the stock muffler and straight pipe it like tke the previous truck, but was stopped by performance muffler shop owner who has done all my work in the past. The owner, a Mopar truck guy, he owns three diesels told me that due to design changes in the head and cat, if I would straight pipe it I would hate it ! He stated that it would give a ugly droning sound in the cab. And if he took off the cat, the truck would develop a flat spot in the power band. Now he is in the muffler business, and he could have said nothing and took ny money and been all the merryer. But he was adamant about the noise issue. I loved the sound of my 2001 straight piped. Anyone running a new Dodge straight piped or a different muffler set up they love ?

Sound good or just raspy?

Mine is a 05 without muffler and I think it sounds great. Not sure if there is a difference between 05 and 06. I still have my kitty but wonder what it would sound like without it.

I do not have any drone.

I have an 05 with a MBRP cat back system in place. I bought the cat test pipe and let me tell you it's LOUD. First if you want to keep your cat in good condition like I did it took several hours to get it off, real pain in the *****. It sounds just like a big rig going down the highway. My problem was while driving out of the devlopment at 4:30AM you could hear the exhaust note off each house you pass. It does sound great but just alittle to loud for me, towing is even worse.

I don't like the sound of the new trucks with stock turbo's straight piped. Change the turbo and you've got music :D

i have mine straight piped well i still have to kitty tho which will be coming off in a cpl weeks but anyways inside without the muffler its not all that much louder than with the muffler i like the sound PM me if you want to hear or try to hear what it sounds like over the phone

Just installed a cat-back MBRP "cool duals" system on my '05 - sounds great at idle, but can't tolerate the "drone" at 2,200 RPM (its much worse when towing). If only someone would offer a cat-back dual exhaust with a decent muffler. May add the MBRP resonator between the kitty and the muff, or go back to the stock exhaust system. MBRP really needs to step up and do their homework! Called Jason @ MBRP to discuss - would you believe that he actually wanted to SELL me their resonator (after the hard earned $$$ I spent for the dang thing, how about slidin' on my way - gratis?) Should have spent the extra bucks in the first place an bought the ATS dual exhaust system. Live and learn!

:(

Mine was just too dang loud while towing without the muffler, so I put the stock one back on until I find one that will give a good drop in EGT while not droning at 1800-2000 rpm. Though I don't like the idea of having to add two mufflers to achieve what I'm looking for, I am considering going with the Rokktech muffler with another muffler in front of it. Has anybody done that yet? If so, how was the result while towing?

My truck was absolutly obnoxious with sraight pipe. Sounded like a bad combo of a turbo prop ag tractor and one of those 4 banger fast and furious rice burners. Drone in cab was so bad, coins in the cubby holes by the cup holders would actually rattle at about 2100 rpm. I never tried it with just the kat, so I don't know if leaving it would help or not.

I have a 05 3500 quad cab long box straight thru with absolutely no drone. We need to figure out where this drone is coming from on some of these trucks..... some have it some don't... weird?

I wonder if the auto keeps the rpms in a range where there is less or no drone? I could change my driving habbits to deal with the drone but got aggravated and put in a muffler. When I get my twins put on next week I'm goin to try it with 5" straight and see what happens.

I have the Jardine and like the sound and + on the MPG. One of my neighbors has the straight pipe and it sounds like s___. Don't know how he gets by Johnny Law either. Doc

Someone explain that to me please.

FWIW, dad's '03 was NASTY straight piped. No kitty. My '04. 5 w/kitty is almost too quiet with a 4" stright thru "muffler" on it. For normal/grocery getting driving I'd like it louder. But for the other 95% of the time, it's plenty loud (read: towing it's sometimes annoying, yet still worth it. ) :D

My '03 sounded like crapola without the muffler. An Aeroturbine made a night & day difference in the sound quality. Didn't make it much quieter but it got rid of the hissy ricer racket. I added a 4" straight through to it, but it still droned more than I liked. Just needed a bigger muffler I guess.

Mines the same... not too bad until you start dipping into it a bit, then it gets loud.

They do not sound the same as the 1st and 2nd gens, but it grows on you. I am almost straight piped and the only time I get a drone is with the slide in camper on the back... the overhang is what does it.

Normal driving doesn't give any drone.

The 3rd gens probably sound louder straight-piped than 2nd gens because you can't hear any other sound coming from the 3rd gen motor.

The worst sounding straight piping I've heard are the 6. 0 ferds. The turbo sounds like a yellow warbler with a bad cough when they take off. :-laf

Someone needed to come up with a muffler bypass. A pipe with a butterfly valve in it connected in front of the muffler and bends over the muffler and back to the tail pipe where it connects. The buttfly valve would direct the exaust either through the muffler or the pipe. You would have the best of both worlds.

No flat spot

Mine fell off and trust me,... . no flat spot.

I bought my 04. 5 used with no muff or cat. What a terrible roar! Sounds like an old chev pickup with glass pack mufflers. I started and ended my search at Magna Flow. I installed their 5in. into 4in. s/s duals and was blown away!!!

Deep rich tone at idle (not to loud at all) and a @$$ kicking roar at wot!!!

I'll never buy any thing else!

I had mine set up for a couple of months with the muffler eliminator. Not as loud as the second gen with the straight pipe- because of the cat I think. Too much drone in the cab at certain speed & load conditions. Pretty loud out the side when putting your foot in it. I could hear the echo off the store fronts and curbs. :D

I would call this obnoxious inside and outside the truck.

Swapped to the MBRP duals this week because of the drone & resonating in the cab. Less drone, but still noticable around 2200. I'll have to tow with it before I can be sure, but I think this is still going to be objectionable to my ears when towing. Nice rumble at idle. Can't hear any echo back from the buildings, so it must be pretty quiet out the rear. Haven't had a chance to get someone else to do a drive by for me yet.

If this still drones when towing it's back to stock for me.

Gary

Did a 5" turbo back exhaust sytem on an 06' and stacked a 5" aeroturbine w/ the built in resonator and removed the cat. Hoped two 36" long mufflers stacked together would cut the drone but it still gets a pretty heavy drone 2000-2100 RPM.
