P2509 and not charging

Well, for me it is an easy decision, Diesel Kleen is approved by Cummins - as the only Product on the market.
And yes, I use it every other month or so to keep the smoke down - and it does.
O.k. then, glad to hear cummins approves Diesel clean, now I don't feel so bad. Thank you

I see part of my post is missing guess I should have doubled check it before I hit post: I used Diesel Clean in almost every tank of fuel in my old 2006 for over 7 years not only as Cetane booster but also anti gel in the winter an I saw no reduction is soot out the tail pipe that is why I gave up on it when I ran out of stock (use to buy it by the case) and will not be using it in new truck. Am I 100% certain Opti Lube lowers soot in my new truck, I don't know due to DPF, but based on my neighbors using in his 2011 { I gave enough to him for 6 tanks of diesel} he reported it stopped his EGR clogging up, my self I can say I have seen a small boost in mpg for both town & hwy driving while using Opti Lube Cetane booster, one other thing Opti Lube is a lot cheaper to use then Diesel Clean...

Well as I said my brother in law turned me on to Diesel Clean, he has an 06 Cummins with the 5.9 engine, mine is a 6.7. I use the one in the gray container. There is another formula in a white container for winter driving I think. I do not use my truck in winter conditions because I winter in Fl. I think I notice a slight inprovement in fuel economy but I can't comment on the EGR, I don't think I have ever had a clog. Maybe because I have used the Diesel Clean lol. I would entertain the idea of useing Opti Lube to give it a try.

Your lucky to not have EGR clog up, I saw the one from the 2011 next door, it was so bad it took him hours of hard work to get it clean, I use to live in upper mid west so used a case or two of Diesel Clean winter formula every year between mid Sept to first part of April then gray bottle rest of the year... Now that I'm in warm western OR have no big need for anti gel except for rare cold snaps that never last more then 7-10 days.

Just wondering, how do you go about cleaning a clogged EGR ?? I have had plenty of things go wrong on my truck, I am not very lucky at all lol.

Two things, get AlfaOBD* so you can do codes easily yourself.
Second, have a dealer check that the trucks ECM (engine control module) runs on the latest software revision.
Throughout the years there have been several updates to correct problems, but not all owner/workshops updated the vehicles.

*cheaper then any decent code reader and an incredible powerful tool
Update,
I contacted my local dealership about checking the ECM for the latest updates and the service advisor told me that their equipment only goes back to 2013 so they could not do it. I wanted to make sure that info was correct so I contacted the dealership that I bought the truck, I haven't been there in years because I moved out of town. I talked to the Service Manager and he told me pretty much the same, the only way they could do it is if they had service bulletins and they would have to cross reference in order to perform my request. He did look up my truck and from what is could see my truck is up to date on service bulletin service. The problem is that all the good diesel mechanics from 2007 that new these trucks and their issues are no longer working for the dealership.

On another issue, on idle at a red light I get a strong smell of exhaust. I had it to the dealership last summer about this time and they checked all exhaust pipes from tail back to the engine and could not find ANYWARE of a leak in the exhaust. I had it in twice for this and they could not find anything. Now, I have been doing a little trouble shooting while in the truck. It seems I only get the smell when the a/c is on and the fan is blowing. When I turn the fan to off, it does not seem to get exhaust smell. Again, this only happens in the city stopping at red lights, it does not occur when at a steady run without stopping. I think I remember a couple years ago while traveling and the a/c was on and the fan was on high speed all of a sudden I started seeing small pieces of foam coming out the vents, if I take a flash light and look in some of the vents I can see bigger pieces of foam that could not come through the vent openings. Comments, suggestions please. Sorry for the long post Thank you,

Well, its been several days since I have been able to check in, I see nobody appears to have a suggestions or have heard of a similar issue with exhaust smell as I stated in my above last post. I guess I'm just the lucky one to have this issue. I will keep checking in, just wondering how many members on this forum are still driving these old 2007 trucks ??

I would think about getting a cab fresh air filter kit from Geno's, https://www.genosgarage.com/product/cff-dg-19003k/ac-cabin-filters.
I put one on my 2014 and cut out a lot of that issue when I found myself in traffic. More than likely, problem wasn't from you and was from around you being pulled in due to a/c being on. Did you have it on re-circulation? Plus it helps keep a lot of debris from getting into HVAC box. Hopefully you have a cabin filter in you system as this also will help prevent debris from getting into box. There's nothing wrong with driving a '07 as long as it fits your needs. I still drive my '01 Gasser around locally. Mainly use to push snow off non-county road I live on. Big upgrade over using the tractor without cab!

Thanks for your reply Topzide, I thought maybe people were done with me listing all the problems with my truck and scratching there heads wondering why I still have it LOL !!
Thanks for the Link, I never heard of this, and I don't believe my truck has a cabin filter on that year of truck. Not sure when it happens if its on re circulate, I think it happens no matter what, as long as the blower is ON. I really think that the foam insulation that I spoke of has something to do with my issue, isn't there some kind of door in the HVAC system that opens and closes ?? maybe that is were the foam let loose and fumes are coming in because its not sealing properly. Thanks for the positive feedback on driving an 07. I do love my truck and its appearance is in excellent condition. I don't know how to post a pic on this forum or I would post pics. I just looked at the link you send me, it looks GREAT, is there any video's on how to install one of these ?? I am not a mechanic. Thanks very much,

No video that I'm aware of. They just go over the vents by windshield wipers with stainless screws. directions are pretty good. Yes, it does sound like the doors aren't sealing well in HVAC box. Bad news is that you'd have to pull dash to get into box to fix! Not sure if pulling blower motor and laying upside down on passengers side would give you any clues or access to possibly fix. Summer time, so things do quiet down a bit. Good luck.

Exhaust smell means usually a leak somewhere around manifold, turbo, exhaust brake.
They are often hard to trace especially if it only leaks when it is hot. Been there done that.

Mine leaked so bad that I had a whistle every time I used the EB.
But to point it I had to crawl under the truck right after start up with the engine running and the EB on and go with my hand around every connection till I felt the exhaust blow on my hand.
You can also use a mirror and a flashlight to search for soot traces in the area, the smallest amount of soot tells you there is a leak.

Edit, you beat me to it...

Your exhaust leak/smell is probably in the engine compartment and when driving or the fan is engaged the fumes are pushed up and ou of the hood and into the fresh air intake.

If you look carefully around the egr plumbing, cooler and valve flanges you may find a patch of black sooty stuff. If so then that is where the leak is at and it needs tightened down or gasket replaced to stop the leak.
The same holds true on the exhaust manifold and turbo flanges/connections.
It doesn't take a big leak for you to smell the untreated exhaust.

I think if you search here on th forum for "egr leak" you'll find some pictures of what I'm talking about.

Yes, I did figure the dash would have to be pulled, I never had that smell until I started seeing that foam coming through the vents.

Well, I did have the truck into the dealership 2 times, and they assured me that there was no leaks in the exhaust

wow guys, thanks for all the great posts, I just wanted to check in quick, its getting late and I will post back to answer your questions and make some comments. I really do appreciate all your help and advice. Thank you so much !!!!
In response to getting a code reader, might I suggest looking into a Scan Guage II. Stays plugged into your OBD port and gives you various gauge capabilities. examples like, Regen, Turbo boost, Trans fluid temp, voltage, Water temp, Egt's both 1 & 2 etc...etc.

Not the same has the as a AlfaOBD code reader this is the best item for diagnostic work on your truck.

A SGII won't even clear codes on these trucks.

My has cleared every code that’s popped up. 2007.5 6.7L
Sent it back to them to update to the latest version a couple of yrs ago. At that time, the current version was 4.55 I believe.

Glad they updated it. I sold mine after it wouldn't clear codes and when I called them to find out why they told me it wasn't able to with the communication protocol that was being used.
