'08 steering upgrade?

What's the procedure for getting the '08 steering upgrade? Do you and the tech have to experience the DW or will they just do it if called upon? Anybody dealt with it yet? Thanks

You have to have a failed part. Dodge isn't going to upgrade how many thousands of trucks built from 03 and up. You will also need to be under the basic warranty or have an extended svc contract of a high enough level to cover the steering parts in question that have failed.

What are they replaceing on the 08's ? or better yet what is going bad ?

I don"t know Bob, Ford had to retrofit millions (?) of Pintos with a fuel filler deflector plate... safety recall! That said, I plan on upgrading to the '08 tie rod/steering link myself... had 2 experiences with the DW, both times low air pressure in the right front. With 50 lbs in both front tires, no DW but I think the '08 design is a definite improvement.

Most d/w issues are tire or worn parts issues so a recall is doubtfull:-laf

I am not convinced the new style steering is the end all but it's a start.

Most of us here just like to upgrade and play with trucks. The only thing that changes as we grow up is the price of our toys

The new linkage connects both knuckles with one tube(larger od also) than the other tube ties into that one to the gearbox.

I still have no idea what we are talking about in specific, is this an aftermarket retro fit, or a comparison between OEM 08 and OEM pre-08 trucks or what?

When you go to the parts book the tie rod end supercede to the new linkage pkg. If you go to the 08 parts book you will not see the new part #s listed yet.

CFish, thanks very much for the link and explanation, now I get it. I killed my OEM steering stabilizer shock absorber the other day and wow these taper pin joints on the new trucks are hard to get apart. The air hammer on a pickle fork worked but the manual pickle fork and hammer method got me no where.

Well, now I am not so sure what is going on, as Bob4x4 tends to really knows his suspension stuff. I know that I DO have a copy of the TSB from POST#9 here--http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/showthread.php?p=2112820

That definitely shows tie rod ends and linkage parts included in the TSB.



But maybe this TSB has nothing to do with the 08 upgrade??

If you go to Dodge and ask for lets say a drag link for your 4x4 the parts will superceed (sp?) to the new 08 parts. The Drag link and tie bar with all the ball joints is about $160-$170 well worth the price. The rip off is the steering dampner they get almost $145 for it. You can get one from the after market "Menro" (sp?) for about $28 for a 03-07 truck. all you have to do is make a bushing out of a 3/8 pipe nipple for the tie bar end. The advantage of the new 08 parts is that you set the toe in and it never changes. Unlike the old parts (03-07) where as the truck bounced the toe in adjustment changes. Do the up date your tires will last a whole lot longer.
