Hate to ask a simple question, but here it goes.

A friend just bought an 09 6. 7 liter and was wondering what exactly his hp and torque levels were. We're hoping it's more than the 06 Duramax down the way(trying to settle a bet).

Thanks,

Ian

Ram pickup = 350hp 650tq. Ram cab and chassis = 305hp 610 tq. Don't pay any attention to the bold power claims of the GM/Isuzu. Running side by side towing the same weights and starting up a grade the Dodge-Cummins will usually remain in OD while the GM will shift down to 4th direct on every grade to rev the engine enough to produce sufficient torque to pull the grade.

The Cummins is usually not the drag race king, it is the king of work. Pulling heavy loads up hills is the specialty of the mighty Cummins.

My 07 LBZ is rated 360 horse/ 650 torque.

My 08 6. 7 manual is rated 350 horse/ 610 torque.

They are hard to compare real world as the entire trucks are different, but by the numbers the duramax wins.

I wonder why they detuned the engine to 610 for the manual? Is it because of the weak dual mass clutch or the G56 itself?

I would be curious to know Chrysler's technical rationale for doing that.

As for my truck, it has plenty of power. Sometimes on the freeway though, I find myself reaching for a 7th gear. 2350 RPMs for a steady 77-80mph cruise seems high, although I'm still getting around 18mpg.

Actually an 07 LBZ is 365 horse/660 torque. The numbers you mention are just that..... numbers!!Hook up a 15K lb trailer and head for the hills and you will be astonished by how quickly numbers lie. ..... Now do the same with your 08' 6. 7. Oo.

My buddy has an 07'LBZ with his magic box and new air intake and MBRP exhaust. His truck is very fast and quite impressive on the highest setting... . almost comparing to my truck, but,it ends there!!The Cummins is a powerhouse and needs no bragging rights on the Interstates pulling heavy up hills.

That has been my experience also! Diesel V8s can accelerate very quickly when unloaded, but are not impressive with a heavy trailer behind and steep grade ahead.

Some folks forget that automaker's brochures are prepared by their marketing divisions with a goal of selling their products, not necessarily providing accurate specs.

As far as I know, there are no industry-wide standards or requirements for measurement or accuracy.

It is funny about brochures and marketing. You would think that people would make informed decisions regarding purchasing a truck where power is necessary and fuel mileage is a concern. But so many fall for the brochure numbers and mocked-up advertising... ... A Powerstroke boasts 350hp and 650torque and just because the brochure states a Duramax has 365hp... it is the hp winner!I'm off to my Chebbie Dealer for a new truck!!Smart enough to fool the 'average' truck buyer I guess:rolleyes:

I'll stick with my 10 year old truck with advertised 235hp and 460. It has a little more than that now and am supposed to get it dynoed in a couple of weeksOo.

Don't buy something without researching thoroughly. In the end,a Cummins will be parked in your driveway if you're looking for towing prowess with fuel economy!!

Seriously, you think I haven't done that? When you're non biased it is amazing how close the stock trucks are. Obviously I am a Cummins fan, building my Fodge which is almost done, but reading some of these statements about the duramax are just hysterical.

Also, the sicker under my Chevy's hood says, "Advertised horsepower - 360"

When I first got my Chevy, I had an 06 5. 9 Dodge also and was very critical of the duramax constantly comparing the two. After 2 years now with the Chevy in my stable, I have no bias between either of the trucks.

I like my Dodge but there are just as many stalwart advocates of the Duramaxes and PS out there. They are all good, but I think the Cummins has the edge.

It may appear that I'm bashing the Duramax... . I still think the Cummins is far superior in pulling power WITH the added bonus of better mileage also. I have been to several campgrounds and ridden the Interstates enough to know that the larger, heavier and most wind resistant trailers seem to be pulled by the Dodges... . because of more power. The Duramax is no dog but it doesn't build sufficient torque for pulling heavy loads until the Allison drops at least one gear-maybe two. The LBZ is surely not well-known for its mileage figures... . loaded or not. Will it out-perform the PS?... . sure will!!No contest !! I'm not certain it would out-perform the Cummins, and certainly will not outlast one.

I'm glad you enjoy your Duramax..... I bet you drive the 93 more than both trucks when it's finally done though:cool:IMHO!!!
