Greeting, from looking over the previous posts it appears that 5w30 synthethic is the concensus for the getrag. Any one have any pros or cons to trying the 0w-30 in the getrag? In several days I plan on adding the fastcoolers to my transmission. I currently have 92 k miles on this transmission with no issues and would like to keep it that way.

The other note is it appears that overfilling the unit is also prefered? This shouldn't be a problem with the fast coolers since I can mount the cooler with 1 of the drain plugs at the top position of the PTO mount. Common sense tells me that to much Oil typically results in blown seals and leaks? Again any comments appreciated.

I just had to rebuild mine. I had to put in a new input shaft bearings and synchros. The reason the input shafts go bad is becouse they are so high up in the trany or the fluid is so low it does not bathe the bearing as good as it should. So the fast coolers will help keep temps down but you MUST overfill to get the oil level up on the gears. I go one quart over thru the top but any way you want to do it. Good luck.

I stuck with 5W30 synthetic (I used Mobil 1) because that's what the manual said to use, no other reason. Unless you live in a super cold climate, I don't know why you'd need to use a lighter oil.

When I changed my Getrag's oil a couple months ago, I added the extra quart through the shifter. It seems to shift smoother, not sure if that's from the extra oil or just the fresh oil change. I filled it until it began to come out the fill port, then plugged it and poured in one more quart.

My friend who rebuilds trannies says "they put that fill plug in that spot for a reason, and you shouldn't overfill it". Another friend just blew his getrag in his Chevy crew cab conversion, and spent $1300 for a used (not rebuilt) trans. They wanted $1900 for a rebuilt. Locked it up hard while towing. The transmission rebuilder friend said he planned to rebuild it, but there were too many parts to replace, and going with the used one was cheaper. After seeing the trashed trans, he thought the extra oil might be a good idea. I'd rather chance a leak than a grenaded trans.

For what it's worth, the extra quart gives me a little peace of mind when I'm towing heavy. I also plan to change it regularly. $25 for the oil vs. replacing it. The manual says you don't ever need to change it. Maybe that's part of why so many have died.

By the way, it takes about 5 quarts total to overfill it by one quart, if I remember right. I didn't know how much to buy the first time I changed it.

Does anyone use the Geno's trans filter? How do you like it?

Dad put a Fastcooler on his Getrag (actually he stole it from my pile of parts when I wasn't looking) :) . This one has the Lexan window for oil level. He installed it with the plug on top (to allow easier topups), filled it to the fill plug level, and then pulled the stick and added 1 extra litre. That brings the level to just under the top of the Fastcooler window-easy to check and maintain. And we all know the easier it is to maintain something the more likelihood of it actually happening! :D So far so good.....
