1/2 syncro

While talking with a guy at work, I found out that his dad is a machinist. So I got to thinkin' and asked him if he would see if his dad thought that he could make a new 1/2 syncro ring. Next day he told me that his dad could make one..... but he wants to know what kind of material to make it out of. He said that he has access to many different metals but wants to know what kind of strength the original is. Any ideas???
