Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) valve noise?

Does anyone know if it is possible to install the 1 3/8 input shaft into the NVG 5600? My trans has the 1 1/4 now and would like to upgrade it to the larger shaft before I install a new clutch.

Thanks

Malcolm

This can be done however it is not a simple deal like on the NV4500's. If I am right you have to replace the entire input shaft that goes all the way through the transmission and it is easier and cheaper to sell that transmission and buy a new one with the 1 3/8 input. I think Haisley Machine has one for sale or trade advertised. You can look for sure at www.haisleymachine.com

input shaft

Well I got a great deal on this transmission. I have the NVG 5 speed in the truck now and going to install this six speed with a double disk clutch. I was thinking of updating the input to make it stronger. If I have to spend a few bucks extra to do this I will.

Thanks for the info

Malcolm

What are you using the truck for that justifies swapping out a 5spd for a 6spd? My '96 had the 5spd, my '00 has the 6spd and the 5spd shifted much, much better. My dad now has the '96 and since he increased the power he's had no complaints about the gear splits on the 5spd while towing a ~13. 5K 5th wheel.

Mike Patton of Standard Trans (1-800-std-tran) told me the early 6 speed is destined to become an orphan, with few if any aftermarket parts like synchros for it. I'd call him before investing a lot of time, etc. into installing it. Apparently almost everything inside is different from what the later 6 speeds have.

Joe,

What's the definition of an early 6 spd vs a late 6 spd? I have a '00 2500 and the trans was replaced under warranty in Jan '02.

5 to 6 speed

The 5 speed in my truck is the Chevy NVG 5 speed not Dodge and has lots of miles on it. I was told that it is not as durable as the Dodge version. I found this six speed to replace it with. I know that the 1 1/4 shaft is probalby fine for what I am doing with it, I was just exploring my options.

I think the main difference between early and late is the input shaft size. I think there must be some other differences, but don't know what.

When NV went to the 1-3/8" input they apparently changed a lot of other stuff internally. It is the earlier trans that you can't get stuff for. The non Dodge trannies may be light or heavy duty; in dodge only V10 and Cummins got the HD. The nut for 5th gear is for Dodges--other applications used different methods. Again, call std. trans. for info; they are up on these trannies.
