The NV5600 went 1. 4 million miles, along with the model 80. . Impressive.

Anywho...

Did the article mention whether the NV5600 or Dana-80 were ever rebuilt?



The reason I ask is because even with light use, the Dana-70/80's frequently need to be gone through after ~150,000 miles.



Did he use AMSOIL?! :-laf

I put 325k miles on my '01 w/o ever touching the Dana 80 except for adding a Mag-Hytec cover. I've forgotten now but think I was using a synthetic blend differential lube oil.

I started out doing 50k lube oil service then, at 150k IIRC, I extended the drain intervals to 100k for the remainder of the time I owned it. I was pulling trailers commercially from 150k to 325k miles.

My son-in-law has owned it since March '06 and it is only used on rare occasions but has 350k on it and the rear end is still quiet and normal.

I think the Dana 80 was pretty tough, particularly with a Mag-Hytec cover.

as i recall the article, guy claimed none of the componets had been redone? seen many a dana 80 go 400 to 500k in fords and dodges, and not get touched. seen at least 2 that didnt make 50k, under light use! friend of mine lost the axle in his 07 dodge cab and chassis [3500] about 2 months ago, less then 30k on the clock. of all places it was on the interstate while pulling a small gooseneck trailer, sorrounded by semi's! lucky no one got hurt and dodge warranty replaced the axle. insurance took care of the tore up tires and bed. . 1st amg axle i have seen fail in this manor.

Sounds like there's a good mix of folks having good or bad luck with Dana-70's/80's. Interesting... not entirely surprising, though. Reports found on forums like this aren't likely to read: "Drove to work today... nothing happened. Truck didn't break. " All we see are the bad news reports... and in my former occupations as a mechanic... people wouldn't bring healthy trucks in for repair.

That's a lot of miles and I too always wonder what all was done durring that time. Below is my trany, rear diff. experience.



305k on my 5600 upgrade and going strong. At 358k I replaced my D80 carrier bearings. They were not that bad but it had no preload, probably setup loose from the factory. The only thing wrong was very slight pitting on the ends of some rollers and the very outside edges of the races from the carrier cocking sideways slightly under load and putting extra pressure on the tips of the rollers. After doing this I continued on towing and finally quit. I decided to pull the 75w140 and put in some 75w90 for a little less drag for daily driving. I'm sure glad I did because one carrier bearing had gone to pieces (not audible so I didn't know I had a problem). I got them warrantied and replaced the pinion bearings as well since they had been scared from all the metal off that defective bearing. Its been a while now and its doing fine.

One VP44

One clutch

Multiple belts and hoses

Two sets of front wheel bearingsTwo Head Gaskets

It says "many" lift pumps.

two water pumps.

one reman vacum pump

one power steering pump

complete set of U Joints

One belt tensioner.

One Fan clutch.

But again it says it has the original Turbo.
