does anybody have experience with diesel in mexico. any suggestions on staions near the 5/805 boarder?

Im carrying spare filters what other precautions or should i make?

I would like to know too. I've been wanting to take my truck on a long road trip south of the border. We drove to Veracruz once, in 1975, and I'll never forget the acrid diesel exhaust billowing out from the trucks trying to climb the grades out of Mexico City heading toward Veracruz. Smelled nothing like diesel exhaust here. It was poorly refined and loaded with sulphur I'm sure.

I have driven thousands of miles in Mexico and have never had a problem with either poor quality fuel or water in the fuel.

I doubt that the price is that low, can anyone verify that?

I get diesel from the Los Angeles harbor area for $1. 86 per gallon, every time I get down there. Only problem I've had was finding a pump with a nozzel small enough to fit the Ram. Several stations along Anahiem blvd. all off brand no name. Works geat, most diesel in the LA area is currently $2. 20 + per gallon.

fuel in my area went from 2. 12 Wednesday morning to 1. 87 Wednesday night. I like that direction of that price change much better than what prices have been doing for the last several months. Hope it keeps up.

No problem with Baja diesel. I been running it in my trucks since 83. Just watch out for crooked attendants.

Mexican Diesel

Guys: We spend 7 to 8 months down in San Felipe, Baja Mexico. The Diesel we get is as good or better than what you buy in Calif or any other border state. As GTani said the prices are controlled by the government. Last fill up I paid $1. 64 (Diesel) and regular unleaded was $1. 97. I've found nothing wrong with the fuel. I do bring several fuel filters down with us and have never had to change one due to bad fuel.

In the state of Baja PEMEX stations have self serve so we don't have to worry about getting ripped off, pump your own. If you come down to Mexico get PESOS for your fuel purchases then you don't have to worry about the exchange rate given by PEMEX.

I can't speak about mainland Mexico, have not been there in years.

Maybe in San felipe most stations are self serve. Not any I know off south of Ensenada. Best place to stop for fuel is in El Rosario. Antonio(BajaCactus) owns the station and the new hotel. Clean restrooms and runs an honest place. I also fuel in Guerrero Negro and Viscaino. No problems there. Avoid the station in Santa Rosalia, nothing but complaints.

Baja Bill just gave you the right stuff. Get posoes and dont worry about the fuel. Probably better than we are running here. I carry a spare filter where ever I go. . PS When you get back dont tell anyone what a great time you had. We dont want too many gringos to find out!!! Have a great time JIM

Do Mexico stations accept credit cards? Pesos/currency trade at a exchange costs about 5% if i recall right?

am i getting this right, any station in baja has the same prices no matter the city. tiajuana or san felipe are sitting at $1. 65 a litter or is it a gallon

I just spent 3 weeks driving Baja, and the diesel is fine. I didn't have any problems in any of the Pemex stations, and I believe it was $4. 9 pesos per liter. Only one of the Pemex was pre pay self serve, and I paid cash always. There are tons of ATM's around to get the best rate of exchange. It's the easiest way to get Pesos.

You absolutely have to have insurance issued by a Mexican company. 21 days was about $390. A month was $465. I got an annual policy for $335. Go figure. But that just means I'll head down again in a couple weeks before the 180 days on my tourist stamp runs out.

San Francisco to Cabo San Lucas and back, great trip!

... and my 83 year old dad gives kudos to the KORE suspension. He whooped every time we got airborne and was just amazed the truck didn't fall apart.

Mexican Diesel

4. 9 Pesos per ltr X 3. 78 ltrs = 18. 52 / 11. 2 (exchange rate)

=$1. 65 per gallon.

TPUIG, glad you had a great trip. :)

The price of diesel is cheaper along the border than down in the interrior. I have lived most of the time in central Mexico for the past 17 years, but I make frequent trips to the States. Here in the interrior diesel costs about $1. 70-1. 75 per gallon. I get better economy on Mexican fuel than American! I have plugged more filters in the States than in Mexico over the past few years. Fuel quality used to be terrible, but they seem to have it worked out now.

DO watch for dishonest dispatchers!!! Some of them will cheat you every chance they get!!! DO be aware that American insurance is not honered in the interrior of the country. Some companies do cover you so many miles into the country. Best bet is to check your coverage!

SLorenzen, to the best of my memory, NO Pemex station will take a credit card. Cash only, use the ATM machines to get cash/pesos. current exchange rate when it comes to your bank

Diesel in Baja

I go down there all the time. Look for the green PMEX stations. The diesel ones have a black price label under tall hanging sings. It is much cheaper as a fill up in my CTD is about $55. You may have to go a little ways out of town to find a station, finding more stations as you head south. Next I go down I will provide the address of a diesel station in TJ. Have no problems with the diesel in Baja.
