Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 1 Battery or 2

Just wondering how many people have elimanated the passenger side battery, and what kind of luck they have had. I disconnected mine to see how it does, I plan on putting BHAF in its place. I have a red top Optima starting her now and no problems so far... . Thanks, Marc

I've only got one battery in my truck right now, and its been starting fine down at 35 degrees so far. It only needs a 1/2 a revolution to start anyway. The battery I have is just a single truck battery, nothing too fancy. Depending on where you live, and how cold it gets, I wouldnt worry too much about it. 2 is always better than 1, but with an Optima you at least have one mean single.

We have never had to remove a battery on a 2nd gen to install A BHAF. Do you think you need to remove the battery or you just want to install it there for another reason?

Hello... I plan on making a cowl for it to get nice cold air, and I'll need the room (if) I go to twins..... :-laf . The 5. 9L that I put in my Oliver tractor starts with just a single Optima all year long. . and it doesn't have any grid heater, coldest start to date is below -10F. THanks Marc

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm about to be in the same boat relocating/removing batteries to make room for the twins.

If you're worried about starting, get one battery (preferably optima) that is close to the CCA's of your two batteries, it'll do the same thing.

What Model Oliver Do you have? My Brother has a 1955 with a 112 horse rated Naturally aspirated B5. 9 in it. I am always interested in Cummins powered Olivers. P.

I actually have a couple... . 1955 with 6BT at about 240hp at the Pto. A 1655 with 4BT and 109 at the Pto. I also have 2255 with a 8. 3L putting way too much power :-laf . Nice to know there are others..... Marc

THe trannies are tougher than most think. Is your 1955 later than 1974?? If so, it is like mine has bigger(thicker) gears, and different bearing preloads which makes them alittle stronger. I am working on a 1955 that is getting 8. 3L in it and will be pulling 10k super farm Oo. This particular tractor is getting different axles, different input and main shafts in the rear end, nice to have a father who is "1" heck of a machinist, and knows his metalulgry . He made the flywheel and clutch in the 2255, South Bend did the others..... MY favorite is the 1655, I was able to move the radiator back and close up the distance between the 6 and now 4 cylinder. I was able to put intercooler up front, and man does she sing down the field pulling 6x16" 's. Sounds nice baling to... ... ... Marc

The 1955 is a 74 model. I know the gearbox has been into twice, And this last time it had to have several new gears, and about all the bearings were replaced. Of course, we have no idea how many hours the old girl has on her. I have often thought about trying to find a 4b for one of the 88's. That would make heck of a machine. Sadly, with no power steering, no 3 pt hitch, & poor hydraulics, the ole 88 wouldn't be worth as much as a 50 or 55 series.



One of the driveability issues we recently beat is the cab noise. My brother is pretty handy when it comes to metalworking/welding. He found a White cab off of a 2-105. Painted that thing up green & white & got it to fit on there. The A/C works better, & the cab is so Much more quiet. It is probably the best tractor we have for driveability. P.

My 1976 2255(not the repowered one) that is claimed to be not built by most, actually came from the factory with a White Cab, she also has inboard planetaries, not outboard. Needless to say really rare!!! But I agree about quiet, it is that reason that we have bought a FEW more with cabs. My 1955 has the Square Oliver cab, I thought it was quiet til I put the cummins in it, and then I found the 2255..... I would love to come see yours sometime... ... Does yours have an inline or rotary pump?? I have been thinking about a 4BT into an 880 for a mounted cornpicker tractor. THe 1655 does a heck of a job, just a little to heavy in the mud ... . Ours has a rotary pump, but not the same pump that dodge uses. Ours was part of some kind of business deal - Cummins Great lakes did the install with a Brand new engine, set up from the factory for the application. The fellow's business deal fell through, & We bought her for a reasonable price



Yup, anytime your are going to be in southeastern Indiana, let me know. We will give it a look. I Don't often get over to central Ohio, but if I do, I will have to have a look. I Don't believe I have ever seen a 22 with inboard planetaries. P.
