quick note:

I emailed that story to a friend of mine. He had a 1991 Saab 900 turbo until recently. He just got rid of it because of he needed a part and noticed alot of frame rot.

It had 514,000 miles when he let it go.

He got a real kick out of that story.

It was a great car!

There was a guy from New York with a '73 Volvo P1800 that has over 3 million on his. Volvo did a huge ad campaign with it a few years ago, and I think he's in the Guinness Book with that one.

I was talking to the owner/driver of an airport limo while riding home from the airport one day and started asking him about miles on his Lincoln. He owned the car and had 2 other drivers for it so it pretty much ran 24-7. I don't remember the total mileage he'd get out of a car but it was well over 500k and close to 1M. He said they did weekly oil changes, transmission services every month or so. They never had to do a muffler or exhaust and this was in Ontario Canada with heavy salt on the roads. I guess since they never really shut down the rig it would never get moisture in the exhaust so it doesn't rust out.

While it is pretty cool to see a rig with this many miles on it I'll bet many other rigs are capable of it with the proper maintenance, driving style and care. Most just don't treat their vehicles that well or they get rid of them before they start getting "unreliable".

You must be talking about Irv Gordon, his P1800 is a '66 model. I remember hearing about that guy first back in the '80s when he hit 1 million. He's a ways shy of 3 million but I wouldn't be surprised if he made it. The interesting thing is since he retired he's been racking up the miles at an even faster pace. It took 21 years to rack up the first million, 15 years for the second million, and in the last 4 years he's added another 480,000 to the ticker. He's on pace to rack the 3rd million in 9 years.

1. 8 million in 1996

I couldn't remember the specifics, but I knew he had a ton of miles on that Volvo... I think he was a service advisor at a Volvo dealership for a while, too.
