This really raises the pucker factor... . Listen to the "controllers" in the tower who are Australian: Ya gotta love it. "The Vodka Burner" as the Aussies call it, literally uses every inch of runway... ... . WATCH THE WHOLE VIDEO. . (shot from the tower)

That's about right. I'm surprised they didn't back up to the extreme edge of the runway first, then run the engines up to 120% of rated RPM with the brakes on. That's probably less margin of safety than most military pilots would like to see; most of those heavies want a good deal more than a mile or two of runway. I'll bet they'd've been happier with a couple JATOs for that lift-off.

Unless I'm misremembering, a fully laden passenger DC-10 could weigh in at around 320 tons: 640,000#; back when flying was just a little nicer, I boarded one and , since it was quiet, looked in the open cockpit hatch. They were taking on fuel and I noticed a digital readout, marked in tons and increasing to 316 and beyond. And I do remember driving along I-84 in NY and seeing a military cargo jet taking off or landing, and seeming to simply hang in the sky moving very slowly. Unlike diesel trucks, heavy cargo jets can't easily be hotrodded.

Not quite a million pounds. It's more like 114,640 lbs. Max gross takeoff weight is only 450k lbs, about 120k less than our own C-17. It's more of a short/soft field workhorse than a heavy hauler. Link

I remember when that plane was here in Vegas about 16 years ago. . they brought it to max thrust against the brakes held it there for a couple of minutes them let the thing go. What a roar that thing made, wings were moving about and everything while it was sitting still.
