Anyone out there change out the 2 peice rear drive shaft for a one peice on a mega cab or long bed? Simple swap or mere involved? Thanks

if you have an auto, then i believe all instances are plug and play. mine was.

worth the money. i was coming up on needing at the the joints replaced so it was just a couple hundred more, so i jumped on it.
the joints are larger than the 2 piece joints.

doghouse diesel has the unints for sale (that where mine came from)

good deal, I was looking at a lacal salvage yard. Thanks

Yeah the unit from Doghouse is a factory Mopar one piece, should be a bolt on and go for you, 15 min tops. The thing is huge but very light and a GREAT improvement.

Doghouse sells the oem Mopar shafts for about $100 more then you can buy them online from mopar discount suppliers like Mopar4Less or others. The advantage of ordering from DD is that you don't need to know the actual mopar part #. If you so some web research and read some threads, you can find the part# you need that matches your trucks configuration and order directly from a Mopar Discount website if you want to save some money.
That being said, Doghouse also makes some upgraded, even more robust one-piece aluminunm shafts with even bigger U-joints, but they cost even more and are probably unnecessary in MOST applications.

I did mine, got it from Doghouse, LOVE it . . all those misc vibrations are gone, wheel hop gone, power is instant . . took about 20 mins to install, spent more of that time getting the wrenches outa the garage.

Wheel hop issue is interesting. I installed some adjustable rods to the rearend of my last Mega cab and it made no difference on the wheel hop. I spent 300 on the dom tubing , heim joints an d weld on brackets. I was a little suspicious about hte two peoce shaft. Thanks

CD,

Can you add some details about the wheel hop issue? When did your truck hop, conditions etc. Under duplicate condition, the hop is now gone? Any noticable wear or damage to 2 pc prior to 1 pc? Mileage at swap?

Thanks,

Gary

mine had a vibration (carrier bearing) when taking off from a stop.
it would be called a shudder. 90 percent of the time if i was going really freaking slow it was not there, most the time it would shutter up to about 30 mph.
10 minutes replacement and all is gone.
i feel that now the truck can apply maximum power short of spinning the wheels comfortable without worrying about throwing/breaking/dropping a u joint. (like i gained 20ish HP)
I considerate it a must do mod. But i do alot of city driving.

I had launch shudder real bad even after replacing the joints. The one piece fixed 90 percent of it and the fluid dampener got rid of the clutch induced part. It really drives like a whole different vehicle, much more refined and smooth.

Not sure I can describe the hop well, but I will give it a try. It didn't do it all the time, only sometimes, but when I'd let out the clutch to start moving from a stop, it was almost like the 2-piece would be in a bind for a second or so and then catch, when it did that, the truck would hop. While it did repeat occasionally, it was one of those not always things that is just irritating.

My dealer could not find anything, they did replace the 2-piece driveshaft with another new 2-piece, they also replaced the center carrier TWICE, they tried all kinds of different things, they ecen played with shims a couple of times.

I also had/got the launch shudder stuff, that started/happened after they replaced the 2-piece drive shaft the second time. Right after they replaced the 2-piece drive shaft I got a rear seal leak and they also fixed that. Poeple were complaining about the shudder, vibrations, hop and seals leaking all about the same time I was having those problems, so it seemed to me to be indicative of something in the drivetrain, maybe a flexing . . both the auto and standard transmission people were having the same problems in the 2006's and then the 2007's. All of this stuff happened during the 36K warranty period. I got tired of going to the dealership and having the same old stuff tried over and over, all they seemed to know how to do was throw parts at it, and that never solved the problems, so I just got the one-piece to be done with it all. None of any of those things have returned since going to the one-piece.

When they started using them in 2008-1/2 as stock shafts, I knew why . . and I bet so did other people, the same other people who have changed over to the one-piece like I have. Dodge really should have recalled the trucks, def a mfg defect that they should have rectified, I learned my lesson, just buy the better part and stop with all the time wasted at the dealer, I bet my time value alone watching them never fix my problem could have bought a good 7 or 8 shafts . . I was beginning to fell like I bought some kind of experimental vehicle, it is my first Dodge truck, and I am not sure I will stay with Dodge when I need another one. All of that rediculous experience is something I do not want to do again.

Dodge isn't the only one with this issue, Ford and GM owners have the same issues with launch shutter and vibrations. I don't know about ford but I've read that GM is also going to 1 pc units with its durapads.

CDonaldson,

Thanks for the description, very interesting. My truck is NV5600 2WD QC SB and it doesn't look like a one pc exists for this combo. Not having the probelm, and my has been a daily driver 118,000 miles just recently started towing my 9,000 lb trailer couple time a year. I did notice that the trans rear seal is looking a bit wet, need to R&R.

Wheel hop is the leaf spring windingup and unwinding. I doubt changing driveshafts will change that. Launch shudder ... ... ... . yes.

The down side of the one piece shaft will be a slightly lower break over angle, not very important if you never do any serious off roading.
