The conversion forum seems to be relatively un-used so I figured Id post this here.

So, I had plans of turning my 1993 excab 4wd cummins into a 4 door at one point in time. Acquired a 4 door... had nearly everything to finish and then for some reason I woke up one day realizing I should build a Ramcharger. Had to be a 74-80 pop-top though, to replace the Jeep. As fate would have it, there were 2 locally on Craigslist. Also as fate would have it... he wanted to trade for a SUV of some sort. I happened to have a 1994 grand cherokee in my backyard sitting there awaiting to be turned into my "pre-runner" for our race truck... So, the ZJ got ousted for 2 Ramchargers.

Initially I was just going to swap the 93's drivetrain into the RC, but then decided to do it a little different and shorten the 93 frame. For a few reasons. One, I wanted to use the flattest leafs possible to keep a good ride, but I eventually want to clear 42" tires. The wider frame gives me a good 2. 5" more ride height right off the bat (suspension mounting points are relative to the lower surface of the frame, body mounting points are off the top... ). I also thought it would be cool to have a true "1-ton RC". Mostly just a novelty... and I like to be different.

I had already swapped a Dana 80 into the 93. BUT, the 80s are $$ to build, heavy, and have a long pinion. I had a 14 bolt laying in the backyard that already had 4. 56's in it, so I am using that instead. It gets me a ~3" longer driveshaft than the dana 80 would have.

So far, I have torn the 93 apart, shortened the frame (~42. 5" cut out), and re-did the rear spring setup. I put on a pair of ~64" long chevy rear leafs from a half-ton 2wd. Mainly for ride quality and travel. Up front I am going to use 52" long dodge rears.

So the end goal:
79 Ramcharger removeable top body on a 93 1 ton cummins frame.
Dana 60, 4. 56's and an ARB. 14 Bolt GM, 4. 56's and either a spool, detroit, ARB, discs, etc.
The motor right now has Don M injectors and some pump work. It made ~280hp at the wheels a few years ago with a stock fuel pin and stock gov springs with a hx35-12. I will prob run an M&H pin, gov springs, and an HE351 on it.
518 auto, rebuilt about 50K ago. Has a TCI converter, will probably be replaced with either a 4500 later on, or at least a DTT converter.
205. Will either wind up being a 203/205 doubled setup, or maybe just a Klune-V between.
Initially I will put 37's on it so I dont destroy the body until I clearance stuff... but the end goal is 40-42's with ~3-4" of lift. On some sort of beadlocked wheel (Walkers or BTR's ideally... If I can find some good used ones)
FOA, King, Fox, Bilstein... some sort of ~2. 5" Diameter shock. Hoping for ~14" front, 16+" rear (vertical).
I am going to use the 93 dash, Seat and door panels.
Outside, it will be the 72-80 body style (no upper body line, higher lower body line) but I will retain the 93 grill just to be different. The grill might wind up line-x'ed body color like my 04.

I have always wanted a "macho" paint schemed cummins (I own a 77 big block macho). But I wanted to do this blue. So I am doing the top Jeep Cosmos Blue (similar to petty blue), the bottom black, and having Macho stripes made in a dark blue. I am unsure what color to do the top... Black or blue.

It will be used as a family rockcrawler/trail vehicle, and also another Chase/Pre-run truck for our Class 7 Desert Race Ranger.

Here are a few recent pics. I will post some up later of the truck when I started, and the RC's.

EDIT 10/31/17: I noticed that all of the early pics in this thread disappeared. Must be because of photobucket being a POS. Here are some random ones...I dont think these are all of them from the past but at least here's a few to get the idea.

Few more random pics. Just some in progress stuff. I will try to keep up more now...

I like it!!!! Super cool project! I wanted to do 2. 5 RR shocks on mine, but just couldn't justify it right now. I'm looking forward to this build!

I like how you plated behind the relocated spring mount. Are you planning on boxing in the frame at all?

Are you going to use any of Jungle's greasable shackles on this build?

Keep it up,

Eric

So the "cut" is actually right between the relocated spring hanger. Its at an angle. So I moved the crossmember along with the spring hanger, just to add rigidity where I welded it back together. I was originally planning on boxing the frame where I cut it, but since I moved the crossmember I dont think its necessary. Also since the cut is "inside" the spring hanger, I think the bending stresses there will be minimal compared to if it was forward of it. Thats partly why I plated behind also, since I cant really box that entire section now. The plate thats bolted in there is 3/8" thick haha... My dad had it laying around so we just used it.

Im hoping to get the RC body mostly on this weekend. I got the front clip, interior and top off 2 weekends ago.

I wish my backyard looked like that, hmmmm which Dodge will I tear apart today.

Keep the info coming, way beyond my skill level, but I really enjoy seeing what is happening.

Howdy Pwerwagn,

Yep, you're in the right place. You are dealing with a first gen engine with a truck that shares a lot with the first gen body. Win-win combination!

You may have already checked these out, but go here and study: Dodge Ram, Ramcharger, Cummins, Jeep, Durango, Power Wagon, Trailduster Community for all Mopar Truck & SUV Owners. 'Paddy's Wagon' (... dyno vids... )

and here Dodge Ram, Ramcharger, Cummins, Jeep, Durango, Power Wagon, Trailduster Community for all Mopar Truck & SUV Owners. - 78 'Nacho'

Now don't 'defect' to there, stay here with your progress please! I love modified stuff too. I had an old '69 Ford F100 that I put a Chrysler 400 and 727TF into. And I'm betting I am gonna try to stuff a Cummins 4BT into an old Scout one day. I love those little rusty boxes... ;)

Well that's a total drag. It looks like the image host site for that second thread I linked is gone. Those were some great shots too. I shoulda copied the whole thread while it was alive a few years ago. The first link to the thread with the gasser seems OK, but that second one was a Cummins buildup.

(P. S> I can't believe spell-check flags 'Cummins', especially on THIS site!) ;)

Hey Andy,

Yeah Ive spent a lot of time on RCC as well. Ive always been a 72-80 dodge nut (also on ORE and machopowerwagon as well). I liked the nacho build... but that was also my reason to do a little different macho scheme.

In all honesty, the ramcharger idea was never in my mind. I always thought they were dumb, yet Ive always owned tons of Jeeps too. The removeable top aspect of the Jeeps are why we have built a bunch. I recently nearly purchased a scout, because of its Jeep-like size, and its dodge like looks. Then we were in Silverton, Co for a week... and one day on the trail in our Jeep it hit me. I had thought about putting my 6B into a scout but the size of the scout I had (was an old 800) killed that idea. For some reason the light when off in my head "RAMCHARGER". It had never crossed my mind one bit. We got back from silverton on a sunday... and by the next saturday I had 2 RC's in my backyard.

I have 2 little boys (and I found out last night a 3rd kid is on the way)... so the room of the RC is way nice. When I was a kid my parents had an RC so I dont know why this was never an obvious choice for me.

Fortunately Ive owned about 8 or 9 72-80 trucks, so I have body parts abound!! And it worked out well. I have never liked the upper body line on the 81+ trucks. And fortunately the pre-81's have the removeable top.

My main dilemma is the grill. I Love the 72-73 Grill (and dont mind the 74-76)... but I think I am just going to use the 93 grill to be unique (and fit the intercooler better). But I am for sure using the extra bird-bath hood I have (I dont like the stepped hoods).

Hey 'Congrats' on the New One on the way!

I love the term 'bird bath' hood. That describes them perfectly. I think they look cool too.

I am still having wild thoughts about the 4 cyl little Cummins in a Scout. There's a sweet '73 304 stickshift near me with the removeable top for 1500. But I think I'd want to go with an auto trans. I would drive it a bit in its factory form before dieseling it.

Glad you saw the Nacho build. That was an awesome truck! Keep us posted with your progress, and we LOVE pics! So far, so good!

I finally got a few hours to work on this. I got the entire RC tub gutted, lifted off and put onto the 93 frame. Fits like a glove!! Had to remove 4" from the rear of the frame to clear the body a little better. The 93 grill fits decently well to the 72-80 body lines. Better than I expected. If I get time tomorrow I'm going to make the 6 rear body mounts and get the tub all mounted up. Then I'll mount the front clip semi permanently and get it running and drive it a bit before I pull it all back apart to paint it and do front suspension.

I'll post some pics of the progress in a bit.

Hey Sam!! I've actually followed the "Macho Gusto" build too. I don't really ever chime in on RCC, not sure why.

Your Nacho build was way cool... and also the reason I'm gonna do a blue themed macho RC over orange (I LOVE the orange, I actually have an orange 77 macho), and the Gusto build is kinda what kept me from putting the RC body on the spare 3rd gen frame I have. (I have this issue with being different... )

If I have any Q's I'll be sure to hit u up. So far it's going together like it's meant to be!!

I guess I should do a build thread on RCC too huh?

Jeff

I'm likin' it!!! That's gonna be a fun little machine with a good suspension under it and the Cummins!

--Eric

Thanks Eric!! I saw your first gen pic in the latest TDR... cool pic. I'm gonna get those same emblems for the RC, they look cool. I still blame about 50% of this build on your first gen suspension thread lol.
