1969 Dodge Power Wagon

I have noticed that on some of the 3500 SWR Mega cabs at the dealers are not running clearance lights. At first I thought that Dodge put the wrong #'s on a 2500 but when I checked the spring pack it was definitely a 3500. The other day a Ford F350 SWR LB pulled up next to me and this truck wasn't running clearance lights. What am I missing here? Has there been a change in DOT and SWR 1 ton trucks?

I am not positive, but I believe the clearance lights are only REQUIRED on trucks over a certain width. The dual wheels make the truck over that said width. There are also side lights and the three center back lights required for those applications.

I converted my '96 2500 to 3500 and installed a flatbed but i already had the cab lights. I paid an extra $90 (I believe) to get them when I ordered the truck. I have seen 1500's with cab clearance lights. All dual rear wheel trucks have them.

The SRW 3500s aren't over 80" wide; thus, they don't come under the DOT requirement for clearance lights like the duallies.

RustyJC has the lighting requirements correct for the vehicle, the truck is not over 80" wide so it is not required to have clearance lights. Having said that, if you tow something over 80" wide THEN the truck must have clearance lights. I believe over in the towing forum you will find a lengthy discussion regarding clearance lights. It is worth the read.

When I purchased my 2005 3500 SRW the list showed the cab lights but it was not considered an option. You guys are correct on the 1500 and 2500 trucks. I guess on the 2006 and newer 3500 SRW the clearance lights are an option. Personally I like the clearance lights.

Thanks for everyone's response.

Thanks for everyone's response.

That is correct, for 2006 the cab lights are option on the SRW

I still don't get what clearance lights ON TOP of a truck will do for something that is WIDER than 80". 99. 999% of the people in the country will have no idea what the lights are for. Therefore, they won't say, "Oh, that truck is wider than 80", I'd better get over a little. "

So if you're pulling something over 80" with a 2500, are you supposed to have lights too? Or do the lights only have to be on the trailer?

I am not sure but I think that the lights have to be on the trailer if it is over 80". No need to have lights on the truck if the trailer has them.

I did more research, seems that any vehicle (truck or trailer) over 80" wide or 30' long has to have front, rear and side clearance lights. They also need reflectors at certain points, but they can be incorporated into the lights. So the tow vehicle, if under 80" does not need the CLs as long as the trailer (over 80" and 30') has the lights.
