Okay, I’ll sum it up in three words - not so easy!

First, this little rascal is hidden underneath the bed of the truck, about mid-way back and just to the left-of-center. Ease of access, let’s call it a 5, and that’s assuming that you don’t mind laying on your back. Here is the photo.

Second, when opened, the tiny yellow drain valve thingee doesn’t drain much fuel. I had hoped it would allow at least 2/3 of the bowl to drain, thus preventing a fuel bath when the bowl was removed. This would not be the case. I drained about two ounces.

Time to remove the filter bowl: out comes the trusty strap wrench. Wrap it around the bottom of the plastic canister and turn counterclockwise. Place a drain pan (Tupperware-type plastic bowl) under the canister. Turn the strap wrench counterclockwise and be prepared to have diesel fuel run down your arm as you remove the canister.

Insert curse word here __________ .

(Hey don’t say I didn’t warn you.)

Reinstallation is the opposite of removal.

For the record, (with the tank lowered we could carefully trace the lines), the small 5/16” line is the line for fuel into the filter, the larger 3/8” line is fuel out to the engine.

Also, for the record, we have asked TDR and Geno’s Garage guru, Lonnie Turner, to see if he can make us a fuel filter canister removal tool.

Actually in hindsight this would have gone better with the "Sprite tool." Yep, loosen the cartridge and capture the diesel fuel and the bottom of the cartridge in the Sprite tool.

And, here is another tip from a TDR member to prevent the diesel fuel spill: That's what wide/thick rubber bands are for. A wide/thick rubber band gives you enough grip so you can spin the filter bowl off while the bag covers everything. And the bag is large enough to prevent spillage.

Finally, to reprime the fuel filter/fuel canister, turn the key to the 'Run' position (do not start) and listen for the transfer pump to buzz and reprime the system. It will shut off after 20 seconds. Repeat two more times and the truck should start without any glitches. If it does stumble and die, do not be alarmed. Try repriming. The fuel injection system will eventually purge the air. (This isn't your father's old tractor, you don't have to "crack" an injector to bleed out air.)

I placed an empty coffee container on the drive shaft under the filter assembly when I changed mine, just drop the filter and everything in it. A two pound plastic container fit just right. Not a difficult job just a bear to get to.

First I used strap wrench to loosen, then used one gallon zip lock bag, not really that hard to do "if" long arms and fit up near the drive shaft, I haven't figure were to reset fuel filter do you know how.

Well after seeing this I guess it will go to dealer for fuel filter change along with oil change. At least I can change oil and oil filter along with fuel filter on my new Mahindra tractor.

EcoDiesel Fuel filter change easy with this threads help

FYI - I did buy the Geno's wrench. Worked great. Take the wrench and loosen until it is loose enough to turn by hand. Take the advice of the gallon ziplock. Simply hold it up around the bowl and the upper housing while loosening the bowl with your hand outside the bag. The fuel pours into the bag and you carefully ease it over the drive shaft without a drop on you. It will drip a bit from the upper mount so put a piece of cardboard below and keep your face out of the way. I figured out Geno's plug replacement o-ring position after already putting the factory drain back in. Honestly the drain plug is only useful for removing trapped water. I wont bother with it as the baggie technique was a no-brainer. The fuel filter change was far easier than the silly slow draining oil filter. I started the oil change before the filter. finished up the fuel filter and the stupid oil housing is still draining. Need a Geno's fix for that spring loaded drain valve in the oil filter housing as it is poorly designed. I don't want to leave a half quart of old oil in the reservoir. I suppose you can actually just loosen the oil cap and wait 5-hours for it to drain and not spill any. I have not been able to get that to work on mine as enough still spills across the catch flange onto the steering u-joint. Good luck.

That would not really work as differential is in the way the filter is forward of the that area , and you still need long arms, the Geno's filter removal tool is perfect for this once the drain is installed the first time. Drain about one quart of diesel, pull filter and install new one. I change the fuel filters on both 1500 and 3500 every 10K miles.

I have a 2016 EcoDiesel. Is there a reset for the fuel filter life. Can you explain how to reset the fuel filter life. I went through the vehicle info center on my dash and there is not fuel filter reset. thanks for the help.

no fuel filter reset, just as there is not a reset for the air filter. just log the mileage and the date. i add all of my maintenance in the notes folder in my iphone. take pics of the filter numbers then log what i feel is important.

take care,

Yup no reminder on the eco's-a mistake in my mind.I have had trucks come in with 50k and act shocked when their power concern was just an old restricted filter and expected Ram to foot the bill, smh
