My 2003 Dodge 3500 now has 100,000 miles on it. All along I have had the truck serviced according to the owner's manual (Schedule "B").

Now, at 100,000 miles, I wonder if there is anything else I should do?

A friend suggests:

1. Have starter contacts replaced with heavy duty ones. (LarryB's --page 120 of TDR Issue 64)

2. Change Power Steering fluid.

3. Change Brake fluid (every 2 or 3 yrs)

4. Carry spare water pump (where to get? Cummins? Dodge? NAPA?)

5. Carry spare Alternator Brushes (where to get?)

Do you folks agree with this?

Any other ideas?

Glenn

I don't think the starter contacts are necessary. They were important on 12v trucks, but on these I don't think I've ever heard of them failing.

Changing brake fluid would be nice. Hopefully your bleeder screws won't snap.

The items you list would be fine to do, but not strictly necessary, in my opinion. I definitely agree with TWest. Check the condition of the accessory belt too.

My 03 has over 530k now and still have original starter. Alternator failed at about 350k. Changed water pump at about 450k just because I was getting afraid it would fail. Water pump at Autozone was about $60 IIRC. PS and brake fluid change is a good idea. Also need a spare serp belt. I have the GDP Walbro lift pump and carry a spare. (Currently have about 270k on Walbro and it is working fine. )

I also would be looking into a spare APPS (also known as Throttle Position Sensor) from Timbo here on TDR. Been using one on mine for about 30k now. Have had three OEM APPS's fail. They are over $500 from Dodge and Timbo has one for around $160 or so that is supposedly less likely to fail.

All this being said, there are auto part stores just about everywhere, and you can usually limp in to get parts. I wouldn't get too concerned with that low of mileage.

I change my ball joints and unit bearings as a PM ever 100k. I am pretty hard on mine because I tow a lot. The next time around I will be putting on the free spin kit.
