If I take my 05 to a good transmission shop that does heavy duty rebulding would they be able to deturmin how mutch life is left. Don't look like there is a problem now , but we are planning a trip to Cal. this winter and trying to ward off any problems. Tow a 13 k 5th and do not want to spend 5 k if there is 30 to 40 k left:confused:

I don't think an automatic transmission shop can tell you how much service life can still be expected without removing the transmission from your truck and tearing it down. Perhaps a transmission builder member can suggest clues that could be seen without a tear down.

How many miles on it now and how much towing have you done? Has it been on the 13k 5'er? How many of the miles on it is daily driving in slower speeds or city driving?

Its really hard to tell how good a trans is because so much depends on use and driving tactics. Your right foot utlimately determines how long the trans will last at times.

A lot of these units last 200k even with towing heavy. On the other hand some have them give up after 30k. It really subjective how long they last.

You have a pretty heavy trailer there, if there is ANY question about reliability rebuild it. I would say if you have over 50k miles and\or a lot of towing and\or a lot of daily driving, rebuild it before you go.

Its a lot cheaper and easier to be pro-active than reactive. ;)

I blew out 2nd gear around 50k miles while towing the camper and it almost ruined a great vacation. Luckily I was able to limp it back home (2 hours and mostly highway) and my trailer was light enough that I could get a 1st to 3rd shift to get going. Dodge "rebuilt" it but only replaced what was broken. This year I got a much heavier camper and had a much longer tow planned. I was not having any transmission issues but was worried about losing something and ruining my only week of vacationthis year. I went to a local shop and had a full rebuild. After it was apart, he showed me some my parts that were almost to the point of failure. He figured I had about 10,000 more miles before I had trouble. Best 3500 bucks I have spent. It had performed flawlessly and pulls my 18k camper very well. Prior to the rebuild, the truck was bone stock, and driven very conservatively with occasional light towing. I do believe my failure is not the norm for the 48re but nonetheless it happened to me.
