Hello,

The clutch in my truck is slipping. I have about a $1000 to spend on a nice quality clutch. Although that rules out a dual disc, I would like to know what other options there are out there. I don't ever plan on pulling the truck and I do little to no towing so if the clutch is a little grabby its not a big deal. Its more of a daily driver than anything. Basically what is the best holding, highest hp clutch out there for my 1,000 bucks?

Thanks

Dave F.

Well Dave I'm afraid the best answer is the South Bend 13" clutch upgrade, which is a few dollars more than $1k, more like 1300-1400 with the FE. That's because it includes replacing the flywheel for one drilled for the larger pressure plate. I got an FE 13" upgrade and was surprised how driveable and smooth it is. In fact I wondered if the shop screwed up and put the wrong clutch in! I have towed a couple times and can back up and start out forward quite easily without going herky-jerky.

Other options are sticking with the stock diameter clutch, but you're going to be limited on HP handling.

Need to know what kind of power levels you are going to be at. If I were to do it again I personally would have saved up some extra $$ for a dual disc. I currently have a 13" FE and I hate it. To grabby for me. Granted I tow with it but driving it empty also sucks. If the 13" OFE's aren't grabby that would be the route to go in my opinion if you are not going to go with extreme power.

South Bend has lowered their prices. You can now get the con-Fe with a new flywheel for your budgeted amount. The con-Fe was and still is my choice.

I have been looking at the normal places for the con-fe with flywheel but I can't seem to find one for 1k any sugestions?

Thanks

There is a guy selling a southbend double disk clutch over on DTR in your price range. You could always buy it and have Peter at southbend check it out?

I was going to bump up my hp a bit so I took my Ofe out and put a brand new FE in. I was suprised how much less pedal pressure it had. I was equally suprised when it started slipping at 475 hp with 1200 miles on it. My OFE held 500 for a while without problems. I am going to have to go to a double disc now. I should have done that instead of the FE. South Bend has offered me a good deal on a new clutch, but it's still a hassel to do it twice. Once in a while it happens. Makes you appreciate customer service. Theirs is excellent.

What kind of conditions does your FE slip under? I have an FE as well, (unknown power right now, hoping for 400rwhp) and I can make it slip sometimes, usually unloaded if Im in low RPMs in 4th or 5th and really feed the fuel to her, other times it holds rock solid though. Thanks for any input.

Hmmm, Ive talked to both Peter and Woody at SBC, and they just keep telling me to break any glaze off of the clutch faces by bringing the clutch to the engagement point, then revving the motor up and down. For as grabby as my FE is around town, I would think it would help better than it does. I may drop the trans and take a look at what the clutch looks like... . The dual disc is sounding better and better, even for the extra cost. .

On the other hand, a buddy with a modded PSD just put an OFE in his truck, and it is silky smooth and holds great, although its not puttin down anywhere near the OFE's limit.

mummn I just ordered a Con Fe because my regular clutch was slipping like you describe in upper rpm in higher gears when you pour the fuel to it. . I hope my expensive clutch doesn't slip. . especially when teh p pump goes in, in the spring...

Later
