11.8 Mpg?

Hello every one. My truck is a 02 ETH/DEE 2500 quad cab 4x4 3. 54. Sunday morning I left on what ended up as a 335 mile round trip.

The first hlaf I was hauling a Jeep TJ for a buddy on my 18' trailer.

Jeep and trailer = about 5300 lbs. I also had maybe 300lbs of stuff in the bed. I set the cruise at 72 to 73 on the way down. I dropped of the Jeep and hauled the emty trailer home at about 74 to 75. I got 11. 8 mpg for the trip (figured by calc). When I left I had about 3900 miles on the truck. I am hoping the mpg goes up once the Cummins breaks in. I am not to upset due to my last truck (a gasser) got 7 to 8 pulling the same load and I love this truck. Oh, I had a good left to right cross wind on the way home. Does the 11. 8 mpg seem ok?

Thanks for the help.

Mileage will go up some with time but that's not that bad. at 70+mph wind is the enemy. a jeep on a trailer is not exactly aerodynamically clean. the weight was not the issue the wind was.

the ETH gets the worst mileage of all the 24v trucks. I would expect you to get 16-19(?20?)mpg empty on the highway and 14-17 in town depending on the weight of your foot and average speed.

a 180* tstat and box and injectors has gotten me about 2mpg. I get a solid 17mpg averaging 80mph empty in my 7600# 3500 4x4 ETH/DEE QC.

Hello Scott- Welcome!

Yes, 11. 8 @70+ is normal imo. BIG difference above 60 MPH. I get about 11-12MPG running 70ish with my cabover, but at 60 I get 15 MPG. Empty I get 18 running 70 and 20 running 60. Problem is I CAN'T DRIVE 60 :D. Too much fun with all that go pedal underfoot...

I can't drive................55!

I agree with Mark. Once you get about 15000 hard miles on it you should get about 14 to 16. Don't worry... ..... it only goes up from there. :)

Three replies already, This board is great. Thank you three very much. I am getting about 19mpg hwy empty. I tow a lite load of about 3500 lbs pretty much every day during the week mostly in the city and I am getting about 13 to 14 on those tanks. On the week ends I am either hauling the Chevelle or the Jeep. The Jeep I was hauling on this trip is tall. While on the trailer it's hood was about cab high. My other problem is my foot is quite heavy. I get such a joy out of seeing how quick I get up to speed while towing. Again thanks.

I would certainly think the ETH's get better milage then us auto trucks (with 4. 10's). Before my cam I was averageing 14. 8 now I average 16. 2 empty... I don't tow.

I drive 75 or so on the highway, and accelrate quickly around town.

ETH gets the worst mileage?

Better take mine back to the dealer, 21mpg and some change empty w/ 40K on the clock now. Towing gets anywhere from 11 - 13 mpg range. Depends on how fast and the WIND. I'd say yours is on target Sangell. It will only get better with more tow miles.

Milage sounds just like mine when I first got it. Now with 17M on it the milage has improved, summer fuel has probably contributed some improvement also.

I just went to CO and back. Milage was just over 13mpg (all three tanks) on the way down with about 2000# on the trailer cruising 80mph most of the way. The way home (three tanks again) was 14mpg with 5500# on the trailer but cruising about 70mph. It seems the speed/wind is a milage killer.

The overall milage for the last 7M miles before the trip was 15. 8mpg. With a couple tanks being aound 18mpg.

My 94 gasser can't compete with numbers like that.

I get about 10 to 12 towing pullee # 2 ( 17+k gcvw )at 75, wind is big factor. 12. 5 to 15 towing pullee # 1 w/ car ( 15k gcvw ) at 75, again wind the factor, Got the same mileage as pullee # 2 with 14k+ 78 Ford F550 tow truck w/ Holmes double boom wrecker ( lots of frontal area ) on trailer to St. Louis. 17 hiway M/T at 80, 13 in city M/T. about 45k of the 58k on the truck is towing. Frontal area has more effect on mileage than weight

Drove from Salt Lake City to Idaho Falls pulling large enclosed trailer. Traveled about 75 MPH going up. MPG were at a surprising 11 MPG. On the way back, I slowed to 65, mileage went to 14 MPG. That trailer is a large umbrella catching wind. The faster the wind, the more fuel to overcome the drag. So 11. 8 is OK for the speed you were traveling.
