got it from a guy at a swap meet. He said it was a "computer chip" he bought for his cummins, but never put it in. It had instructions from TST with it. There is a big 11 stamped on the top. I installed it in stock location first, made a noticable difference. Then I slid it all the way foward. Now it pulls hard, real hard. Doesnt slip the clutch, though. But man does it smoke! The EGT didnt change much at all empty, but I didnt hook up the trailer yet. I also slid the afc full foward. I have a few questions:

1) roughly how much does a #11 make full foward (stock location=280/680)

2) where should I put the AFC?

3) many dont seem to like a #11/3kgsk combo, mine defuels hard at about 2700, should I get the 3kgsk?

4) What should I do to the starwheel? Or should I get the AFC spring kit?

5) How come the TDR website is so addictive? It seems like I spend half my time here looking at stuff!!!

Thanks for your help!!!

AFC should be all the way forward unless you want to cut down on the smoke. Starwheel you can/should adjust till you get the smoke your willing to deal with and the boost building up the way you like.

My AFC is all the way forward and my starwheel is as far as it will go also.

So if you tighten the starwheel, you get more power and smoke? Will moving the afc back affect the power much, at the result of less smoke? Im not sure how much boost Im running, my guage only goes to 30psi. Im ordering a 60psi isspro guage today.

Definately get the 3k kit! It cures the problems with the wide 5sp spacing. Mine pulls HARD to 3400 - it would go more but my foot stops there. The afc spring kit is nice with the 5sp - the transition from 0 boost fueling is more gradual, instead of going from no fuel to full blast, in an instant. I also did the rocker adjustment. I'm using the 11 now (centered) and like it a lot. PLENTY of power and egt runs low. My custom plate is on the shelf until I decide to put my new Con O clutch to the test! Craig

pwerwagn,

The AFC simply restricts movement of the governor lever arm at pre-boost fueling levels (i. e. from idle to about 1200+ rpm). It stops the lever arm from contacting and following the contours of the plate. This restricts the pump from over-fueling until the boost comes up enough to supply the air required for proper combustion. The AFC is controlled by turbo boost. So once boost starts to come on, the AFC arm gets out of the way.

By sliding the housing forward, you're reducing the amount it holds back the governor arm. By turning the wheel, toward the engine, your reducing the preload on the spring inside the AFC, there by allowing it to move out of the way at lower boost (sooner in the rev range).

All this reduction in AFC involvement means you'll get more fuel in the low revs, thus more power, but at the expense of more smoke until boost comes up.

"Your job, Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to adjust the AFC to provide the necessary power level needed pre-boost without killing every insect behind you within 100 yards. As always, the TDR will disavow any knowledge of your actions. "

My combination of #11 plate, 370 injectors and 4k governor springs didn't come close to the results I expected. In fact, I was sure something drastic was wrong (major boost leak, throttle linkage adjustment not correct, etc. ). Finally, I tried a #10 plate. Made all the difference in the world! Oo. Oo.

Some engines just don't like the #11 plate, 4k springs and 370 injector combination.

Im fairly impressed with my 11 plate. I wanted a #10, but you cant beat $50. So maybe TST will upgrade me to a#10 for minimal $$$? Anyways, the 11 pulls hard. It will occasionally break the tires loose in 3rd. If I leave a light in 3rd, and put my foot down, it smokes like a train. I dont mind it, but I dont want to be the cause of some enviornmentalist thinking diesels are going to destroy the world. so, I am going to slide the afc back and play with the starwheel and see what I can do. Is it possible to eliminate 75% of the smoke without sliding the plate back a at all? Im waiting to get my BHAF on, that might help slightly with smoke.

I'm gonna guess full forward is close to 340hp. I think drawson dyno'd there with the #11 full forward. I don't remember if that was with stock injectors or not. But that # jives with what Mark @ TST said.

Mark said that the 215 pump is really sensitive to plate movement ... like 40 to 60hp by sliding it all the way forward. 280+60 & you're there. You probably picked up a little over 100 ft-lbs too.

I had that setup w/300 injectors & could slip the clutch only if I let it out too slow under power.

btw ... @32psi w/the stock turbo & I was pushing 1500 degrees, pre-turbo.

1500*, on the edge huh? My pyro is still post, (fixing to change that) and I see about 35psi. The hottest it has got is a tad over 900* post, in fifth at about 100mph. I think i am going to be backing out a lot with the trailer on! Hopefully I can dyno it in the stock location and full foward. I am going to try to in a few weeks, as soon as the dyno place gets the ability to get rpm. This mornin I raced a new 600 with a 6-speed and we were neck and neck until about 35, then I pulled ahead.

So far I'm happy with my 96 Fummins with 11 plate - All stock - Pulls our 5000# TT over the Oregon Coast range in 4th with the pyro hitting 950-1150 and 28# of boost. I can't quite hold 5th but I have not played with the air yet. I should be able to bring the temps down if I can hit 35# boost.

BV,

Make sure your air filter is good, and at least replace the muffler with a less restrictive one. It helped immensley on mine. The spool up is improved, and the egt dropped a bit. I'd bet a straight pipe would be even more noticable.

Whats a muffler :D - Oh I have one but you can see right threw it. I'm running bigger/better air filter as well - Thanks

My 11 plate wouldn't provide any additional power over stock till we adjusted the gov. lever. R. ebel and I adjusted it so that when it hits the plate it is about 1/2 way up the lower ramp instead of the bottom (where I think it was staying) Now I have the plate slid about 1/2 way forward from stock. This was using the eyeball-ocronymer to locate it. Stock air box (w/ kn), stock injectors, stock exhaust minus the cat, stock turbo. Timing at 16-16. 5. AFC is full forward and I think we tightened (or loosened can't remember) the star wheel, then gave it 15 clicks the other direction. Clutch went soon after.

Boost jumps to 30 psi, then eases up to about 33 psi, I've never taken this truck past 3000 rpm.

In April (and over 5000 ft. ) it dyno'd at 370 hp/900 tq. I thought that was a bit high, but other trucks that day were coming in where they thought they should be. It smokes at idle when cold, smokes heavy when excellerating. I just put new tires on so I'm goin' easy on it. But with the old rubber it would break loose in 1st thru 4th. (all 5 on wet pavement :-laf )

I'm saving for 4" or 5" exh, 16 cm housing and BHAF. I should have just the truck I need with that.
