As per 2001 service and owner propaganda: 11 Quarts with filter change. Done it three times and always brings me to the full line. I read this from someone else and I may start doing it too: take the "extra" quart and pour it in after the oil has all drained out to flush the bottom of the pan out before you put the plug back in.

Owner's manual (who reads that???) says never overfill when changing oil. I've always used 11 quarts from the beginning. Dipstick reads right on the full mark.

I've been changing oil at 5,000 mile intervals, thinking of extending it to 7,500 when the motor has 50,000 miles on it.

11 qrts 02;12 qrts 03

I put 11 qrts in my 02 and 12 qrts in my 03. That's with one qrt prefilled in each filter.

Both dipsticks read right on the full mark.

Dipsticks don't lie, I think:D

11 for me and my 01 is full. I once put 15 in on accident and drove it for a day that way. No blown seals or massive blow by and that was 20K miles ago. I don't think 12 is going to hurt anything.

funny thing is my owners manual says to add 11 quarts to the engine and 1 quart to the filter, that would make 12 quarts total. Is my manual any different than anyone else's for the 03?

11 quarts here. I usually change every 3-3500miles. I do quite a bit of in town driving. I know might be a little quick on the change but, no problems at all so far.

Hello?

All these posts and no one has mentioned the TSB for a mis calibrated dipstick. Dont remember the the PN's off hand, but the "incorrect" dipstick shows full at a hair over three gal.

According to the TSB, it is "not an engine damaging level", and that it is not necessary to take action. I think it refers to early 24v engines.

In other words, no matter the dipstick, pour three gal. in an leave it. In mine, 3 gallons actually shows a little over full just pouring in, but pour a quart in the filter and then fill the crank case and its right on the money. Think of the extra quart as added cooling.
