What does it take to machine the NV4500 flywheel to accept the NV5600 clutch in a 6spd conversion using the 13" clutch? Thanks.

Talk to Peter at South Bend Clutch, sorry I don't have their number in front of me. All that has to be done is to re-drill and tap new holes for the pressure plate. I am running this exact setup in my '98 12 valve. I'm sure SBC would do an exchange with you. There is info on my NV5600 and 13" clutch upgrade on my mods page linked in my signature.

I just did mine. Just had to drill new holes on the 5-speed flywheel to match the larger 13" 6-speed clutch pattern.

Just beware if doing it yourself, the material is HARD!!! Mine ended up needing a M-42 bit and tap to get it done right. Also, the Mill didnt like to drill straight through. It had to drill about 1/4", then pull out and clean hole, and drill the rest.

NV4500 in you auto

I have a 96 RAM2500 that I converted from auto to manual. It was quite a while ago but I'll try to give you all thew details.

I got the NV4500 from our local wrecking yard, the shaft with the clutch actuating arm were in the bell housing. ($1500. 00) You do not have to get another crossmember as the one you have will work. You are going to find that the NV4500 is 1 1/8" shorter than the auto so the drive shafts will need to be lenghthen the rear and shorten the front, assuming that you have a 4X4. The input spline into the NV241 will have to be changed out. I got mine from Ventures Truck Parts in Ogden, Utah. venturesparts.com, 1-800-464-1713. Great folks! You will need the clutch and brake hangar from the wrecking yard too. Not really hard to install. While you are removing the hangar, look the left of the steering colume, you will see a jumper wire there that has green connectors. (I think) It is only about five onches long. You will need that so your back uplights will work. The master cylinder, resavour and slave cylinder are a unit and they seem to be in great demand as I could not find one at a wrecking yard. ($310. 00) at the parts house. You wont have to remove all the old shift linkage but remove enough to get the job done. There were some other wiring problems that I ran into but can not recall just what they were. Something to do with the transmission temp light. (remove bulb place on the floor and step on it) that is what I did. I used the overdrive switch for the exaust brake inabler. Oh, be sure to get a nut for the fifth gear problem the NV4500 had. I have the wrench to get the job done and will be glad tom loan it to you. I also have a socket for the spline shaft. Necessary to hold the shaft for the 360lbs torque on the new nut.

You will have to get a flywheel out of a 5. 9 diesel. The V10 will not fit. Voice of experience. I wish you all the luck in the world. Just do the job one step at a time and it will work out fine. I've had mine for five years and have not mhad one minute of problems with it. Have fun. PM me if you need anything else.

Isn't there any concern with getting the pressuer plate perfectly centered on the flywheel? How would one go about doing this?

Yes, the pressure plate must be correctly located on the flywheel. If it is not, the balance will be off and you can expect a vibration. Also, these flywheels have pilot holes for the shoulder bolts, these are used to properly center the cover on the flywheel. BE CAREFULL!

I second CumminsPower98--- Just call Peter. This is one project you can not scrounge and cut corners on. You will be glad you did once everything is all lined up. . He resurfaced and drilled out my flywheel as well. I did a 5 spd to 6 spd conversion, and I am glad I let him do my flywheel. 2 years and not a single problem! Thanks again Peter!

Chris am I hearing you correctly? You were able to have your 5 speed flywheel machined by Peter for use in your 6 speed conversion.

Pondering.

Yep... Everything went perfect when it was time to install as well. . once again, I HIGHLY recommend his products and services. . I had a snag when installing another clutch, and he was kind enough to even give me his home phone # to try to help me out over the phone, on the weekend. . Customer service does NOT get any sweeter than that!! I am sold on Southbend Clutches! Sorry if I am being biased on one brand, but the Customer service is what counts anywhere!

Thanks for input guys. We had a local machine the 5spd flywheel to the 13" clutch bolt pattern and everything went well... ... ..... so far.

What I did was "borrow" a 6-speed flywheel from a 3rd gen, took both flywheels to the machine shop, and had them drill my flywheel to the same specs as the 3rd gen. Turned out perfect.
