I have a friend with a 98 12 valve automatic. Truck idle set at 800 by Cummins, problem is every once in a while it dies at idle with truck in gear. Any thoughts?

Is the AC on when it is idling in gear at 800rpm? Mine won't idle consistently unless they hold above 750. Just a few rpm can makes a difference.

Has he adjusted his governor springs, my stock springs were adjusted to give me slightly higher rpm and I constantly had the idle problem and the truck dying if you , either stabbed the throttle to fast or let-up on the throttle to fast.

Recently had the 3k GSK installed and tuned by the fine folks at PDR (Piers Diesel Reseach) and extremly happy to report there is NO idle problem and NO dying engine when stabbing the throttle or letting up fast on the throttle.

Performance is awesome now, and I struggled with the problem(s) you mentioned for over two years and accepted it as normal, it's not. Have your buddy take it to a knowledgeable shop and get it right, he will be so much more happier with the truck.
