Hey All... .

Just posting this on here because I haven't had much luck on the conversion board. Anyway, what I am doing is building a crew-cab GMC and dropping a cummins into it as well as the drive train. Anyway, drivetrain is pretty much the same from 94-02 so thats not a concern. My question is what year would be best? I was originally thinking the 12 valve for reliablity but the 24 valve can be bombed and then changed easily for e-tests and what not. Although they are more expensive to do. My main concern is reliability and have heard of the 24valve pumps going earlier than the 12 valves. Also, wireing would be alot easier with the 12 valve but I will be getting the whole donour cehical so it wouldn't be a big deal.

A couple few's on which would be best and reasons why would be great... ..... Thanks... . Ryan

Don't get me wrong, I love my truck, but if I was doing it all over again I would have gotten a 12 valve. The 24's have issues with lift pumps going bad which in turn lead to failures of the injector pump. I'm not a big fan of electronics either, so the 12-valve has a definate advantage. Finally, the 12 can be bombed about as much as the 24v and probably for less money although I don't have facts to back tht one up. That's just my $0. 02 worth.

If its reliability you're after I'd go all mechanical, 12 valves and a 5 speed. If you feel lucky, go with the 24 valve and an auto. I have one of each and if I had to jump in one tomorrow to go to Alaska,it would be my old 95.

If you got the $$$$ then grab a 24v and do the p-pump conversion - Best of both worlds.

BTW - California Auto and Manual 12v's (94-98) are rated at 180hp.

Okay, thanks for the speedy reply's. I was always thinking about the 12valve as my first pick.

About the 24valve and the p-pump idea? can someone please explain that to me? which pump is it? the one off a 94-98 12 valve? or another? what else would I need other than just the pump and also what kind of prices would the conversion cost? how bombable is the p-pump?

I just want something non electrical that will take some horsepower.

Thanks... Ryan

12v or 24v

I absolutely love my 24v, but on a conversion I would do a 12v, simple wiring and not as many worries as a 24v. Would be cool to have a 6sp behind a 12v:D
