What truck would you guys rather have? 12 valve or common rail? I love mine(2004. 5 common rail), but I can't afford the payment anymore (lost job) so a cheaper 12 valve that I could pay cash for sounds pretty good right now.

I wouldn't go back to that noise if you paid me even if it got 10 more MPG...

I would take a FORD with the cummins drive train, and a GM interior with all their bells and whistles... and comfort...

I like my 12v much better than my CR. So does my wife so I'm stuck with the CR.

If I wouldn't take a bath on my CR I'd sell it and get a 98 12v 5spd short bed.

Go for the 12v if you can find a decent one left that's not rotted out.

I loved my 12v except it needed a cab, bed, doors from rot.

It's too bad you can't have a 3rd gen body & interior with a 12v motor! That would be the ultimate! I really love my 3rd gen, but i'm always worrying about injector/electrical issues coming up in the future. Not too mention, with the high cost of fuel, the old 12v's will run on just about anything while the 3rd gens are a little more picky.

I owned both at the same time ('98 & '03), but ended up selling the '98.

I'd trust either truck to drive cross country, but the '03 was much more comfortable. However, I liked driving the '98 more with it's 12-valve sound! I sure do miss it, but the '03 was the better all-around match for a 1-truck scenario.

Um BOTH

The 12 valve is like having an old BB chevy with solid lifters in hot rod.

The 6. 7 is like having That hot rod BB chevy power in a cadillac with hydrolic lifters.

The new truck is so much tighter and plush.

The old one has 300k miles and still hauls ...

They will both roast the tires !!!!!

They would probably both run close in the 1/4 mile.

They are both fun to drive!

12v!
Have had 3 12vs, 24v, and cr.

Like the newer trucks. 4 doors is really nice. Noise isn't a big deal because they usually end up with stacks anyway.

Helping a buddy with a 4 door short box Superduty 12v conversion this fall. That would be my choice.

I am fortunate enough to have the best of both! I drove Black Betty (98. 4) to work on Monday and tuesday, mom's BMW wednesday, and Mighty Whitey (2004. 5) yesterday and today. for some reason I love both, however Black Betty is more fun to drive with the loud HX40! my honest opinion would be to have both; one for fun, onee for business! sorry if it does not help, but that's my two cents worth.

I would have to go with the 12-valve because of the reliability with the fuel delivery. The mechanical pump seemed to not have as many problems. That and the older trucks were more inclined to be more acceptable to "alternative" fuels ( biodiesel and the "illegal" stuff). The icing on the cake is, there's stuff out there that will put the power of a commonrail in that 12 valver without robbing it of reliability or durability.
