That's the last straw. I offered my 01 HO 4wd 6 speed to my son to take out on a date. He replied he would rather take Moms 98 12 valve 5 speed instead, says it is more fun to drive than mine

Bad thing is that I tend to agree with him (them) :(

Stupid 4500 and P7100! Atleast I have a bigger truck payment ;)

the '98 quad cab, 12v, 5 spd is the best truck ever built in my opinion, . . i wish i had one, only one in the family that has one is mom and its stock AAAHHH! well at least it has one of my killer trannies in it, lol.

I have driven a few 6 speeds.

I cant say they were "fun" to drive.

5 speeds are pretty user friendly though.

I guess for sledding the 6 speed is stronger but the 5 speed holds its own.

I have driven 1 six spend and 1 five speed that had the newer shifter that makes the shifts closer together.

Can't say the first them were fun to drive cause I missed a gear once or twice coming from my 97 5spd, but I would like to have the newer gear shift for the 5spd on my truck anyways!

Hey Tejas Deezul STACK IT then see if he wants to drive it! :-laf

redram, I'm not an expert, but I've driven R. ebel's '97 and compared to my '98, the gears are much closer together in mine. I don't know what they changed, but it's definatly different.

TD, your son has good taste, so does Mrs. TDOo. :p

I think that they shortened as well as straightened the stick to make it a short throw version. My guy at the parts counter at the stealer said the stick alone was $200:eek:

Newer Shifter

The 98 and newer 4500s have a different shift tower that when coupled with the lever matches the 5600 with shift movement. I installed a newer 4500 in my 96. Throughs are closer, but old trans shifted better.

Newer trans requires a newer SKINNY shift lever.

i've never driven a manual cummins, but aren't the shorter gear shifts better in a 6 speed than a 5 speed-i guess earlier than 98- (keep up more boost with the higher rpms)?

now, you're all makin me jealous:{ :{ i talked with a guy today and he loves his manual except that he can't shift it fast enough...

we'll see, but if i had to do it again, i'd get a manual.

I don't want a 6-speed. I used to think they were cool, but if you got a spring kit you don't really need the extra gear right? If I had to go through another gear when racing, I would shoot myself. 5 is enough for me!! It would be cool if the 6th gear was taller than the 5th on a 5-speed.

Wanna keep your boost up and have the fastest shifts going? Get a DTT auto!!Oo. The 12 valve goes without saying... :D

----> '97 DTT auto, Piersified. Let's race!

Pheeewwwwwww....

Man I was just getting ready to send him some info for a local place for mental health,LOL. I was certain he did not mean he hated 12valve(the PROPERLY Valved) 5spd trucks. Hmmm, maybe he took a nap while polishing his truck and the fumes got to his head??. LOL. Seems to me the kid has it correct though and man does a adult HATE when a teenager is correct. Its like well almost the most demoralizing thing on the earth.

Now,if you like the feel and heart beat of a PROPERLY valved truck while your rowing through the 5spd gear box, you'll need to find a owner who is tuned and has converted over to the NV5600. Man you talk about staying in the powerband longer and making a great truck even better, what a ride. Got a older gentleman who is in my area who did this to his and after a ride in it I am convinced.

The NV5600 in a improperly valved truck(24) which revs so fast can not make full use of the gearboxes potential due to short shift points and its harshness at times to row. BUT,drop her in behind a long winding PROPERLY valved truck, which can use the extra hole where we need it between 3 & 4,and it will become a righteous ride. Slower revving and wider powerbands of the 12 valve make better use of the newer transmission... ..... Andy

P. S. -Rhondasway,You sound like you have been around Stefan too long and caught the same thinking disease he has. As I told him once I'll repeat it here... Just as you think a slushbox equipped truck can not be beaten a stick driver will go by you.

Real race cars and trucks have stick shifts... ... .

Oh, here we go... :)

Tell ya what: I'll go head to head with an equivilently powered 5 speed any day! Heck, I'll take on any HP, but I know for a fact that I'll beat any stick that has the same HP as me! Bring it on (you'll probably have to drop a couple hundred HP... )!

Of course, if I can be beaten by a stick driver, I'll try to take it like a man! ---->:{

One more thing: if a stick is driven as aggressively as I drive my auto, I'm pretty sure that clutch will be history looooong before my DTT... (insert "moon" smilie here).

BTW, I'm just havin' fun and talkin' trash here, no hard feelings! :D :D Oo.

the good thing is that a clutch can be had at for much less moola than an auto transmission upgrade. tc and vb are about the same i guess, but the internals have to be in good condition to do so and have it last. the thing that scared me away from the 5 speed is the 5th gear problem.

Hammer,

I have to disagree I in all aspects of the NV5600 being a performance transmission.

Just so you know, my 24v's fueling is re-curved to 3400rpm before any defueling, so I have just as long a powerband as a spring'd 7100. But the 6spd sucks for anykind of racing... the gears are just too short in it (2-3-4). I drag mine all the time at the track and that transmission is grinding and crying the whole way down the 1/4.

I had a 5spd truck and I wished I hadn't got rid of it. Just think, 1 less gear to have to kill precious time shifting through, 1 less off-boost I'm having to make up. My truck would easily be 1 second faster if I had a 5spd.

I do agree that real race cars and trucks have sticks.

Rhonda, I wouldn't push it about the clutch being history... . consider all the bombers with autos, my stick transmission has only been out once, just to install the clutch. :D
