12 VDC air comp

I found a small Hadley air compressor unit model#850. Has anybody used these? I plan on using a reservoir tank, along with the compressor to supply my horns. I probably wont use it for much else, cept maybe a low tire or the like.

Is this the right compressor for me? Does anybody have any other recommendations? TIA

Get the specs for the duty cycle so you don't burn it up

I was looking for an air compressor that would be reliable and cheap. A mechanic suggested the compressors used in some of the GM cars that had the air ride suspensions. He said some regular customers would come to get gas and you could hear the pump running continuously when they would show up. This was after the shocks or airlines would give out. Some of these drivers didn't know or care what was going on.

I called a few of the bone yards and found one for $30. They appear to be fairly well built. The motor has a counter balance on the crankshaft and the whole unit is mounted on rubber bushings. I found an air tank at a truck yard about 7 inches in diameter and 16 inches long (2 gallons?). It takes a little over 6 minutes to fill to 115 psi.

I use my air supply much like you want to do. Air up the odd tire and toot my 25 in. Grovers.

ET, I believe the late 80's to early 90's Cadillacs, Olds and Buicks had these. The one I salvaged came from a Tornado. The compressor was on the left wheel well behind the battery. It took me less then 10 minutes to get off.

The compressor has a foam filter on the inlet and I think there is a dryer after the compressor. I tested my compressor before I installed it and I got up to 125 psi.

Just for air horns.......

I used the cheap ($10) tire inflator from Wal-Mart. I got a pressure switch (135 PSI) from J. C. Whitney. It's made by hadley and so far this little compressor has help up fine. I doub't it would have the oomph to fill a large tire though.
