12000 miles blown engine

A month ago I took my wife's 1500 for a five hundred mile road trip. No problems or so I thought. When I got back both my wife and my 16 yr old son said they thought the truck had a little bit different sound to it. Sounded like a diesel to me. My wife took me out for a short drive to try to get me to hear what they were hearing. Still nothing. Next day engine light came on for an exhaust code. Took the truck to the dealer where it has been for 2-1/2 weeks. Service manager was trying to figure out what the slight noise was before diesel mechanic could look at it but he had no luck figuring it out. Today service manger and mechanic took truck out on the road to try to find the source of the noise. Shortly after leaving dealership engine developed a hard knock and they barely made it back before engine locked up. Something went severely wrong in the bottom end of engine. New engine needed. Not sure i like this new engine at all. This truck has been to the shop more than any other ram I have or ever have owned. Guess we will wait and see what happens next.#@$%!

Mechanic started taking the engine apart and sending pictures to headquarters and it didn't take too much before he was told to stop and they would be sending new engine. Love a lot of things about this truck but it has been in the shop several times before this. Mostly exhaust related issues. May not wait on the fix and trade it off. Dealer has been great to work with so far (21 yrs). This is the first problem truck I've had.

Ram has a lot at stake here.
Theyre rolling the dice on the only thing keeping them above water- their diesel reputation. So much has been invested since 1989- and people won't care about model specifics.
I wonder how the Titan XD is doing, and that would be an indicator about how the 1500 truck would be if they followed through with that engine.

Unfortunately they wanted to much for one, I was very interested, I just couldn't afford the higher payment. That's why I bought the Tacoma, the truck has enough capability to work for me, and the price was way better. I had posted many times, on wanting a Titan XD, but Nissan just won't budge, and only deliver their top of the line trucks to dealers.

I never liked the ECO Diesel nor would I buy one. I'm sorry about the failures, but it was predictable.

From the latest earning call from CMI I calculated that in Q2 2016 (March-June) they shipped roughly 4,500 V8s to Nissan, compared to the 33K ISB67 they shipped to FCA. In Q1, again by my calculation, they shipped roughly 6,000 engines to Nissan (compared to 34K shipped to FCA). Q1 was likely affected by the ramping of XD which officially entered production end of last year and there's 1 quarter lag so engine sold by CMI in Q1 are for truck getting to the dealerships in Q2. Given that overall CMI revenue from pickup is in line with expectations despite strong FCA growth, I suspect the XD is doing at best in line, but possibly worse than expected.
