DPF/Cat removal question

#@$%! After all the prior problems with this truck I decided to risk another trip, this time to Phoenix, then to San Diego, even though the vehicle still surges off idle First day out CEL light came on again. Later that day the overhead beeped and said air filter service. This at 123276 miles.

Dropped off fiver at a park in Phoenix and took to Dodge. Turbo plugged, O2 sensors bad, air filter OK,DPF 90 % blocked.

Needs new O2 sensors, run cleaning cycle, and try to clean turbo, (new turbo on last visit).

So I am in a rental car paying fees and watching my trip go to hell courtesy of Dodge.

Service guy ran history of vehicle and couldn't believe the number of times I have tried to fix the same surging problem.

Its time you and every one else who gets stuck with the Lemon Law, send a package to the EPA with all of your repairs, and costs if any. It will fall on deaf ears but at least they will start to understand our dilemma. All three Auto makers should do this every time they lose money from the lemon law. And do it electronically so you can E-mail all of the politicians at the same time at a push of a button. Don't forget to include the poor MPG with Fuel receipts and calcs. If every one did this, maybe, just maybe they will start to sweat.

2008 6. 7 Auto

I dropped the muffler on it and put duals on it breathes better

got first CEL at 13,000 miles it wass all sooted up from interstate highway driving with exhaust brake on ,also egr cleaning

now oil levels are climbing due to fuel dilution issues made them note it in my truck log at the dealer

CEL at 20,000 miles.

New turbo this week,

also made them install the exhaust pipe wrap as per the TSB ,and newO2 sensors this week

code P2000

code P2262

will go over every TSB with the dealer and give him copys of my TDR sheet to line item and inspect every mod, tired of having my service manager on speed dial he has been as helpful as Chrysler will let him be officially .

looking into h-36 recall also

egr and dpf choking it all up poor design on the exhaust side very restrictive.

Lemon law for you 3 repairs of the same nature in a year qualifies it for total buyback we have it here in texas

heard the 2010 will have urea injection according to my magazine info and different exhaust setup

I heard it already meets the next level of emissions regs. That will be a big plus because they wont need to redesign again. Hopefully just work out the bugs.

Got POS back from Earnhardt's Dodge, New updated O2 sensors (2), exhaust wrap, etc. . Also, reflashed engine controller from AQ to AR. No idea why overhead said air filter service.

recomended front diff service 200. 00 rear dif service 200. 00 and change fule filter and flush injectors at 140. 00. Pass on those. Dodge must not think much of there American axles if they have to be serviced at 15K miles.

Off today for San Diego than home. Hope it makes it that far without something else going wrong.

I too have had the overhead beep and then say air filter service needed, I have had it come on with a new air filter in place. It seems to come on if you let up on the pedal then stomp it to pass, at least that is what I have noticed. Maybe the air sensor gets confused when you need to suck alot of air all at once????

Have a good rest of your trip, drive safe.

..... which makes me think about something - the truck is ready for 2011 emissions. WITHOUT all the emissions junk - EGR - DPF - NOX - wouldn't the truck meet TODAYS (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) emissions standards?? You think?

Why would it be against Federal Law to remove the JUNK?

EGR has to be one of the worst things that can be done to an engine. I tore down a couple of 1970's era engines that were EGR equipped and what a gunked up mess the intakes were. And the PCV stuff mucked up engines.

Let's do some Al_Gore logic. Regen cycles - burn MORE fuel to clean up soot build up in the DPF. Get lower fuel mileage, BUT we are not emitting as many nasty gases into the environment. Dump a load of SOOT and hot air back into your engine via the EGR system! What a load of crap! A lot of this EPA/CARB stuff defies logic and physics!

For every action, there is an opposite action!

If you have ever taken the DPF loose from the NOX filter, you will dump out a good quantity of - guess what - SOOT!

I wonder how the dealer's dispose of the SOOT they clean out every 12,000 miles or so. Reckon they have an environmentally friendly disposal method?

It has to do with the way they measure the emissions. They go by particles per million not by actual fuel consumed. What they need to do is put a DPF in the EGR line.

If you try and dump out a DPF you might get some black soot from the pipe, but unless you break the DPF substrate apart no (or very little) ash will come out.

And dealers don't clean DPF's they replace them, so no ash is disposed of by the dealer. There is now a core charge on every CAT so they get recycled properly.

Xgunfighter,

I went through the same thing you experienced last summer. While on vacation last summer it turned into nothing but a trip trying to find dealers to work on it, so I decided that was enough. Chrysler bought it back in November.
