Well, before I'm stoned on this one, ... ... let me just say I've searched every 12cm thread out there in 1st gen land and then some and it seems like a number of guys out there are having success towing with the 12cm wastegated housing with light/moderate fueling. But most of those posts were some time ago. Anybody still out there running a 12cm wastegated H1C or HX35 and been towing for a while, and not burning holes through their pistons? K2

bottom line is you gotta watch the pyro... you could do some porting to a 12cm, and probably do alright, but your 16 should offer better towing EGT's than the 12cm wastegated I believe.

Forrest, I hear ya, I drive by my boost and pyro as it is. What I'm after is, about 200 rwhp, cleaning up bottom end smoke, quicker spool up, overall efficiency in mpg, and ability to occaisionally tow ~10,000 lbs. K2

I towed a bit with a 12. At the time my load was about 4000 to 5000lbs and I still had to get out of it on the hills. The new toy hauler + toys and stuff is now between 8000 and 9000lbs. I did a test run with this load and it was an absolute no go. So, 3000k gov kit, Piers modded H1C, Piers modded VE and a 16cm housing and I'm a much happier camper. I can still run into trouble pulling long hills but it is at least manageable now.

Considering just about every CTD from 94 on comes factory with a 12cm housing they will work. Granted, the incidents of melting pistons has gone since 94 but that could be a numbers game also.

You have to consider the turbo package as a whole and, as Forrst said, WATCH THE PYRO. The 12 matched with a good compressor will make a lot of power, little smoke, have good throttle reaction, and have controllable temps. It takes a little more work to tune it and you have to watch the pyro a little closer and pick your loads but it will work. In addition it allows the use of a good tight converter to get the power down and not have a bog problem. If its possible to run a 24V with bigger injectors and a comp towing a steel 3 horse trailer and only have egt issues when WOT, then its possible on a 12V. Your fueling will depend on the air available and vice versa.

A good exhaust manifold and some porting work and it should be a winner.

IF you have 3. 54 gears, I'd say go for the 12cm housing, no more wieght than you are pulling. I towed 8-9 tons of hay at a time (plus a tare of 9250 on the rig), and had no trouble on the flats of KS and rolling hills of eastern Colo. I ran 65mph in 5th gear; downshifted a few times on a hill, due to EGT and pyro being in the pipe, and not knowing FOR SURE. PUt the probe in the manifold if you are going to tow, period. Even if it is a 2 horse trailer and a Shetland pony.

However, in my 91 (hotter injectors than nonIC), with 4. 10 gears, for some reason I ran into backpressure drive pressure issues at highway speeds- 10psi boost to keep 60mph empty. Too much for my liking. Put the ported 18 back on, and dropped my cruise boost, no change in EGT, at cruise or WOT.

I've run a 12 wastegate in my 92 for the last 6 years. For most everything, especially around town start and stop, I like it better than the 16-which I ran for about 2 years. The 12 allows you to run more fuel without smoke. The only problem I have is around 70-75MPH (3. 54 gears) the engine is turning into a compressor until the wastegate opens and then it is good on up to 90+. Towing I don't run that fast unless it is flat terrain, on big hills I watch the pyro. but have never had issue with temp.
