12cm2 Exhaust Housing Install?

I am sure this topic has been discussed a few times before. But, I am hoping to get some input form those who have tried it lately, or learn of any new ideas.



I am thinking of installing a 12cm2 exhaust housing on the ol dodge. I would like to try it first before I make any drastic alterations (I think I can get a hold of one for testing purposes). So, what does it take? By the look of my dads '97, the waste gate adds about 1 1/4" to the exhaust housing. This means that the exhaust would have to be pushed back that far. I made some quick measurements and found that everything would be really close. The downpipe would hit the black cover on the firewall (maybe use some good insulation to keep from melting it). Another concern is exhaust clearance. With the 4" exhaust clearances are tight as it is. I don’t know if I could push the entire system back 1 1/4" without hitting the transfer case, or the frame by the spare tire. What else is there? Do you guys think it is worth it?



Any ideas are appreciated.

I hate to say it, but you'll have to cut out about 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" to fit the 12cm, same goes for the 14cm as well.

What I'd suggest, and what I'm doing, is getting an "adapter" made to put back in, just in case the (14cm in my case) doesn't work out.

You can usually go to an exhaust shop and find scrap downpipe ends which can be reassembled to attach the modified downpipe back to the original housing.

OR you can buy an adapter, or new downpipe for around $90. 00 or there abouts.

Your downpipe will have to be modified in order to fit the 12cm wastegated housing. I dont know about any other members, but I wired my wastegate shut as I never intend to use it. If you are interested, I can get you a 12cm non wastegated housing that requires no modification of the downpipe if you dont need a wastegate.

The difference is indeed about 1-1/4". I have the WG 12 on my truck. It looked to me like you could squeeze it in there with no modification to the pipe to try it. I shortened mine 1" and made sure there was enough room in the slip joint at the bottom of the down pipe to go back if I want to. I really like the WG 12 and have it set at about 20psi. I think that unless you tow heavy loads (I only tow 6-7K) you will be happier with the WG 12 over the 16. My truck has much more in-town zip and actually runs cooler when towing- (I think because I have the gate set to open at 20).

What kind of "adapter" are you thinking about? My downpipe is welded to the exhaust, so I can't adjust length there. I guess I might be able to grind the weld off, slide the pipe in farther, and then clamp it. I could always weld it again when I decide which housing I am going to use.

It sounds like you have had very good luck with the small housing, even when towing.



I would like to try this sometime this fall, or winter.

Mike, have a peek at PW's setup, it's perfect for what your going to do.

In my case I was going to use 2 trimmed ends off of a couple downpipes from the scrap bin and weld them together so I could just slip it into the opening between my 16cm (if I were to go back to it) and the trimmed downpipe which would be short due to installing the 14cm.

Does that explanation make sense?? I hope so. Anyway that way I could try different housings and even swap out if I was going to tow heavy once or twice a year so my EGT's would be managable.
