12v + 727 ?

How much radiator do you need for a 4BT?

What a 6BT looks like from all angles

The idea is a 12v and a 727 into a Land Rover 101 forward control. The 727 because LR used them briefly in the 80's and there is a tailshaft assembly in existence to mate it to a Land Rover LT 230 transfer case for which pretty serious underdrives are now available. The 727 because shifting a manual in the forward control is unnecessarily awkward business...

So, will the 727 bolt up to the 12v without an adapter ?

Can someone point me to dimensions for the 12v - didn't turn up anything useful in a search - and provide recommendations on the best years for the 12v ? Mine's a 3rd gen and I know next to nothing about 1st gens.

Here's a picture of a 101 FC (GS Model) for those of you who may not be familair with them:

Thanks very much for your help

89, 90, and 91s all had 727s if they were automatic. Is there room for a 6B in that thing? If not, a 4B is 2 cyls shorter and has the same bolt arrangement in the rear, so all of the 6 and 4 rear parts are interchangeable.

Thanks very much. That at least gets things started. I'm not sure if there is room, that's part of the challenge. I think width, and more likely depth, are the issues rather than length given that it's a forward control. The 4BT wouldn't be my first choice as a replacement for the Rover V8 although it is worth thinking about. Is the 4BT capable of modding with something like the TST torque plate kit for a reasonable kick in power? Otherwise there are other diesels that would deliver more power to weight.

Thanks again

You need 38" minimum between the firewall and the rear of the raditor to fit a 6B and you have to make sure that the frame can take the 1200 lbs of a complete engine. For a 4B the engine bay only needs to be 28. 5 long and it weighs about 250 lbs less. The first gen B's are 30" tall from the bottom of the pan to the top of the valve covers.

Most of the 4B's your going to fiind out there have the VE pump. Very few 4B's were made with the P pump before Cummiins went to the ISB.
