Competition Highest HP 2nd Gen ETH- stock pump, no drugs..

I got a chance to work on a motor today that is a little different. Differences are: No freeze plug in the back of the block..... hole is there but no plug. Block heater hole wasn't tapped. Not a storm block... . no second drain bung. Big main cap bolts..... looks like 14mm's. Block isn't inset machined for the oil pump... . odd! Aft oil supply bung in the drivers side of the block that you don't use is blank.

This short block was bought new, no rebuild.

Anyone know were this type comes from... ... . BTW, no block number they usually are under the pump.

Just a guess, (I'm basicaly a Cummins noob) but could it be a marine block. A couple of the things you described kinda points in that direction to me, the larger main cap bolts, the block not being machined for the oil pump, thinking dry sump. Like I said just a guess. I'm sure someone with more knowledge will set the record straight as to what this block is.

My guess is 6BT industrial block. Seen a few with bigger mains and journals vs. truck 6BT's. I've heard the industrial B's have a thicker block also.

A nother semi informed answer , some trackers used a heavyer block as part of the frame , so biger frame , or any of the above.

The oil pump deal was that it bolts up the same but the old block a 97' has a tiny step down, the oil pump bolted in and look fine. The 97' block may be the one that is different as I don't remember that on either one of my blocks when I did my motor swap.

One things is for sure, I may try to get one of these short blocks just to have, he got a smoking deal on it.

I hear about the same thing on Industrial cylinder heads, better steel and allot thicker.

does it have the bigger webbing on the outside of the block etc?. . I have a couple here. . some 1st gen blocks and a lobster boat block and a marine genset block. the marine genset block is REALLY beefy has lots of extra external webbing etc... I plan on using that for my build up. .

Do you have any pics?

Thanks,

Deo

Jim, what you mean block heater hole wasn't tapped? Aren't they all in freeze plug hole on pass side? I was told all blocks with only one turbo drain have 14mm mains. Supposively 96 and older, but i have a 97 with only one drain. The engine from the old puller was out of a 96 F-800 and thats how it was, also had visually bigger maincap area. Unless your spinning over 6k or making obscene triple digit boost numbers it probably doesn't matter for a pick-up truck application anyways...

Nope, it has a 3/4 pipe thread hole for the block heater, it doesn't use either of the three freeze plugs

I'll have to look again for the extra webbing on the block, I was pretty much focused on the build up but I still have a few things to do when the cam comes in and I'll try to remember to take a camera.

I wounder if it is a CDC/Cummins ag motor? You wouldn't think the marine motor would have the need for a block heater.

My folk's neighbor has a Case IH 1896 with a 5. 9 in it. I will try and get a good look at the exterior of the block this weekend.
