I need to get a new head, where is the best place to get a new one. I would like it to be from cummins not aftermarket castings. Any body have part # and what price they usually run.
Yeah... its been a known problem with 12v heads. They like to crack at the ears where the exhaust manifold bolts up. Switching to an aftermarket ex. manifold (htt, ats, ect)prevents this from happening since they are more resistant to expansion and contraction from heat. Also, cummins no longer makes heads for 12v engines. If I remember correctly Komatsu makes the 12v heads now.
I blew my headgasket a couple months ago and ended up buying a brand new head from Piers cuz getting the original one fixed would have cost a little more than what PDR charged me... . even with the shipping. Not to mention my original head could have cracked somewhere around cylinder #6 but haven't fluxed it yet. The new head is very nice, definately an aftermarket casting but the quality is good. The head was decked, pocket ported, HD exh. valve springs installed, HD stem seals, new valves and o-ringed. Overall I would recommend PDR for your new head needs, they treated me very well.
You may also want to try ATS Diesel in Colorado, they sell new head I think as well but their price may be a bit more than PDR.
