12V engine noise reduction efforts...

Guess What I Saw Today

Cavitation erosion (Ford)

She THREW THEM OUT!!! And, she's still ALIVE????? :D

Noise on top of engine: hood and firewall insulation helps (Dynamat).

Major noise reduction at idle is from turning idle speed down to 700 rpm. about 1dba.

Our editor, Robert, did the article and testing. He tore out the interior to add more dynamat on the floor, firewall, etc.

Send me a SASE and I'll copy it for you.

They just tell me "substantial". I'll try and find out a little more like db numbers.

Ya, substantial price I'd say! I'm gonna have to work on that too.

From what I understand the largest part of exterior noise reduction comes from wrapping/covering the oil pan.

For an experiment, get some carpet pad and some duct tape and go to work on the oil pan. Obviosly this won't be pretty, but it will give you an idea of how effective a "blanket" might be in that area.

Then you can try the same thing on the valve covers.

I cannot take credit for this suggestion. I met up with TDR member "lsfarm" (I think that what his handle is) a few weeks ago, and you could stand next to the front of his truck and carry on a converstaion without raising your voice. I cannot do this standing in front of my truck. No big deal to me though:) He also said he can go through the drive through without shutting off the truck now.

Noise Reduction - to LarryB

Larry,

Where did you get all of that noise reduction "gear". It is really expensive, but does look well made. Thanks

Ron

There is an industrial noise reduction/insulation company and one of the guys made up this set for his Ram. I'm working on having it available on my site. If anyone thinks this would be a good item to offer, let me know.

Larry

Larry,

I think it would be a hot seller, especially if you could work on the price a bit. If you need a tester, I'm up in the Eastside area and would gladly voulnteer!

Thanks

Advanced Thermal Products, Inc

Advanced Thermal Products, Inc are makers of a sound reduction kit for the rams.

Pricey but it sounds like it works and you can buy the parts of it that you want or the whole thing.

Do a search in the Product & accessory forum, it has been talked about there. A member did a good post on it with sound measurements some time ago now. It may be far enough back in the past that it is in the archives that are not available. I thought it was written up in the TDR magazine a while ago too but I can't find it now, perhaps it was in the old product review section on the website, I can't find that either. A lot of help I am.

eng noise

Here is a reply I recieved from Josparkz concerning ATP products and noise reduction, from a 28-10-01 thread in the 2nd gen/no eng/drivtrain area

It is definetly your well made , industrial rated , military spec. , bullet proof (?) and fireproof type oil pan cover. Seems like it weighed 20 or 30 lbs .

I liked the little name plate they put on there that had my name on it . It is supposed to be good up to 1800 degrees, so as far as the products that go on the hotter locations , meltdown should not be a problem. I thought it was a pain in the butt to install though. I ended up having to jack the engine up to get it by the cross brace in the front. It fit really well around the pan once it was in place . Finding stuff to tie it on to besides the transmission lines was tough in a few spots. I hope it doesn't start getting crap in it through the front edge, cause I sure don't want to take it off and clean it. Customer support was pretty good.

I thought about trying to make something out of fiberglass insulation , just to see how it worked. Since I have very little time or desire to crawl under my truck these days, I figured I would just go with the product that was supposed to do the job. It does .

Noise Reduction - I bit the bullet

I called and talked to Tim at ATP today. He said that with the basic kit he recorded a 17 db noise reduction in the cab, and additional 5 db reduction with the hood blanket and oil pan cover installed. These are significant numbers

I ordered everything except the oil pan cover (mainly keeps outside the cab noise levels down) for a cool $930. Ouch!

When I install it I'll post how it went and the before/after results.

As if it really needs it I read where next year's Duramax will come with a double wall oil pan with insulation between the walls. They say it will reduce the engine noise 25%.
